stealthy1 3,964
Not that I've fished properly for years, but I've never really seen the point in braid. I bet you didn't get broken up that often with mono. Your right of course. Trouble is with the same breaking strain mono as braid, the mono is very stiff. Braid is nice and limp. Stiff never hurt anyone. Unless you are a stiff. Quote Link to post
TeDuke 276
Just done some high tech testing in the shed of the braid in my tackle box. Very interesting to say the least. 18lb Korda Gravel brown colour broke at 18lb 15lb Fox went at 7lb 15lb ESP went at 14lb 20lb ESP went at 19lb 14lb Kryston supersilk went at 10lb 15lb Double strength mono went at 13lb after stretching a lonnnnnnnng way. 12lb Drennan sinkbraid went at 12lb And the 18lb Korda I've been using, the weed green colour broke at 12lb ESP it is then. That's a very interesting test, just out of curiosity how long has the braid been in your tackle box which you have tested , I've had bad spools of mono before but I've never had braid snap and judging by the test everyone bar esp and drenan is well under the breaking strain which is kind of frightening seeing as they're not exactly cheap 1 Quote Link to post

The Fox and ESP was bought earlier this year. The 20lb today. Not a very scientific test I must admit. I pulled off 3mts of each braid/line, tied a loop in each end, put one end on the Vice handle, the other onto my weigh scales and pulled till they broke. Interesting, don't you think ?? 2 Quote Link to post
Ossie n Arch 1,682
I'm off out again Monday evening. I'll be using the ESP. I'm slightly pissed off that i've lost fish coz the braid isn't up to the job. Not on really is it ?? Quote Link to post

Very interesting I've never had a problem with kyrston or any other braid tbh , my younger brother took kyrston mantis in 15lb to France and caught 2 50s over a dozen 40s and numerous 20/ 30 lb carp without 1 breakage, there could be a multitude of reasons why it broke but I'd put it down to mass production ,it's the same as anything if you make enough of it there's bound to be bad batches that sneak through, I'd also send an email to Korda explaining what's happened with the braid which in reality could have cost you a fish of a lifetime, you never know they might just send you a nice goody bag ? if not write to angling times or another big magazine as I doubt they'd want the bad publicity Quote Link to post
Ossie n Arch 1,682
I like braid, I like it's suppleness. What I dont like is if I buy a braid that says 15lb on the lable, I don't want it breaking at 7lb. (Fox) Iv'e lost two fish this week that have possibly been way over my PB, and I've spent two seasons trying to catch, only for the braid (That I thought was up to the job) give way. Not to mention leaving hooks in the fish. The Barbel in the Dove go to over 18lb. With 12lb main line and 18lb braid, I fancy my chances. If the braid I'm using breaks at 12lb, I could be on a loser straight away. Quote Link to post
treecreeper 1,136
Kryston super mantis in 25lb if you get snapped up with that there's something wrong. Quote Link to post
Flipper_Al 1,012
I only use kryston coated braid, either the mantis or snakebite 3 Quote Link to post
neil r 1,858
The only braid i use for barbel is suffix stealth skin or sheath skin or whatever they are calling it this week . Ive been using it for years in 15lb on the ribble and had loads of barbel into doubles on it with no problems Quote Link to post
Ossie n Arch 1,682
The problem now is, do you trust the stated breaking strain on the spool of any braid you buy ?? The Dove is a small river, 20yds wide, so you are not getting much main line stretch to help cushion the fight. I can see me now having to use a much higher breaking strain braid than I'd like just to be on the safe side. Quote Link to post
Flipper_Al 1,012
I do trust the Kryston stuff If i was you i would bin the braid your using, then i would shorten the hooklink down to 12" 1 Quote Link to post
