mackay 3,400
Personally, I never take the bitch away from the pups if she wants to be with them and continue to let them suckle. They are no way ready to be deprived of maternal care at 4 weeks, even though they may be eating well. The bitch, if she is a good mother, will continue to clean them up, play with them, and teach them manners. I've seen plenty of litters where the bitch has been forcibly removed from the pups at 4 weeks, and even though the pups will grow up well, given the correct care by their owners, they seem to have a slightly lost look about them, and are seldom as clean as they should be. I can't see why anyone would deliberately deprive their pups of maternal care if the bitch wants to be with her pups. No offence intended Skycat, but when I see a litter of pups still on the mother much beyond four weeks I'm inclined to think it's laziness on the breeders part. Fresh straw or shavings will keep them clean, that's of course if you change it regular. Bitches teach pups manners?. I've seen hand reared pups, that have had no contact with their mother after birth right through to pups removed from their mothers all ages from them on. You know what?, you couldn't tell the difference. I've seen several litters which couldn't be reared by their mother for whatever reason, some going onto another bitch the others hand reared. You know what?, you couldn't tell the difference. Have a slightly lost look about them?, don't quite get that one. Seldom as clean as they should be?, why would the age a pup is taken from it's mother, or possibly never having been reared by it's mother have any bearing whatsoever on it's cleanliness. I've had folk out to see pups at around the six week mark and the bitch is looking so well many people don't think she's the mother. I've seen bitches with the pups still suckling around the six week mark and the bitch looks like something off an rspca poster. Quote Link to post

In the cases you mention praise must be given to those who bred the litters for rearing the pups so well. Many wouldn't. But as for bitches looking poor after the 6 week mark: that would be entirely the fault of the breeder for not giving enough good food to the bitch, or for not introducing solid food to the pups early enough. All my bitches looked as fat as could be during and after nursing, sometimes very big litters. The quality of the food is paramount. 4 Quote Link to post
socks 32,253
The litter I just bred stopped feeding on the bitch at close to the six week mark and the lads that came to collect puppies commented how she looked like she hadn't even whelped a litter .... So not all bitches look like rspca adverts ....... 6 Quote Link to post

jeemes 4,485
I cut my litters down to 6 or sometimes 4. I would never expect a bitch to feed more than 6. My pups are usually still getting feeds off the mum at 6 or even 8 weeks. You cant beat that milk imo and they only get one chance in life to get it. The bitch recovers quickly aswell and goes back to work no problem. The only reason people are keen to wean usually is really because they cant wait to get shut of the pups. Quote Link to post
