Mary 352
A terrier for bushing is a waste of time, good way to loose a dog, the terrier goes to ground no collar on never to be seen again!!!!! Spaniels are for bushing, save yourself the hassle and get a spaniel bud far better for the job and a lot more steady around stock Great to see some common sense in 3 pages of otherwise nonsense. A dog unsteady around stock wouldn't be the dogs fault. Imo. Quote Link to post
neems 2,406
I'd go for a spaniel or spaniel x terrier for a dog purely for bushing. But there's loads of breeds will do the job, i'd stay away from any pure terriers or bull breeds, they can be more trouble than they're worth imo. 1 Quote Link to post
bunnyboiler 1,053
When I wanted a busher to work with my lurcher I was told to go the Plummer rout as they are mustard on bunnies and around cover and very rarely go to ground I must of got one of the rare ones because the b*****d took one look at me at the age of 18 months and down he went no collar f**k all luckily enough a friend of mine who was into his digging and got him out cost me £400 odd for a B&F the following week and every time we go out I have to know the land or keep him on the lead which can spoil a good days mooching if somethings has moved in he's down and it's always in the back of your mind when your out if I was to get a busher I'd go down the beagle X spaniel route or something similar ? MIK 4,756
The only problem I have with spaniels are I often bump into foxes ,which my whippet has taken a natural hatered to so would be better off with a terrier to give a helping hand when ever he grabs one ,I never go out for foxes bacause rabbits are my main game but there everywhere round where I'm fromThere's spaniels that can deal with foxesWhere? terryd 8,422
never ever trust a terrier well I would dispute that lol this little fella I could quite happily turn my back on while took a line straight through lambs sheep or what ever. I could literally bet my right arm on him. Wish I could say the same for my present dog lol. When it came to putting rabbits in the bag with the ferrets or flushing out he would have run rings round your spaniels no doubt Quote Link to post

Neal 1,867
I've not seen it with my own eyes but...I bought some bantams from a lady last weekend who had a very handy looking springer which, she told me, had killed a fox. Quote Link to post

Had a good day ferreting with some mates once they were well impressed with his marking. Then heading back he went to ground in a nice little earth on a bracken bank and we had a fox out. It rounded the day nicely and i was proud as punch Edited September 1, 2016 by terryd 1 Quote Link to post

Surprised there, it can and does happen atb AtNo I don't mate ...for a lab or a spaniel to catch a fox in the first place it would have to be a poor specimen ...I often hear this from gun dog lads and many years ago a lad said his lab had killed many foxes so I gave it the oppertunity and the big black lab who was a bit of a bully to other dogs on a shoot day didn't want to know when a little 14 lb vixen showed it its pearlys ....I very much doubt there is a spaniel out the consistently killing foxes 3 Quote Link to post
Daniel cain 45,400
When we were kids my mate had a spaniel dog that went everywhere with us,it would catch in cover and draw game from a hole with more gutso than half the bull/greys I've seen.I know what I saw with my own eyes to be true:).atb dc 1 Quote Link to post
