krawnden 1,036
I just idly clicked on the link in the ad that's currently running in the Working Dogs classified section for ftc springer spaniel pups and had a quick look at that site. Read this interesting article about the importance of the female when breeding http://www.edgegrovegundogs.co.uk/the_girls.html 3 Quote Link to post
Bosun11 537
The importance of good bitches to improve stock is huge, not only in a line but in general. I honestly believe many breeders/hunters just 'dont get it and i've preached on the subject for years... Thing is, i should have practiced what i preached 12 years ago and my line would never have ended.... Quote Link to post
zigzag dan 784
I raced greyhounds for many years and once had a chat with multiple Derby winning trainer Charlie Lister , he told me he put far more importance on the lines of the bitch than the dog ,,,,,,,,,,both with what they had done on the track and what had produced in earlier litters ,,,,,,,,,,,remember a stud dog can mate hundreds of bitches ,chances are he will throw a decent pup somewhere , bitches if used correctly should only produce a couple of litters . 1 Quote Link to post
desertbred 5,490
Our bitches form the basis of our saluki breeding. We say if a farmer has a handful of the best corn seeds and plants them in poor or average soil no matter how he tends the crop it will be poor. The same put the best stud to a poor bitch chances are the pups will struggle as its the bitches body that nutures the litter so best available stud and top quality bitch is the way to go Edited June 7, 2016 by desertbred 3 Quote Link to post
stone rose 353
youve only got to look at courseing pedegrees to see most top dogs have come from bitchs that produce litters of top class animals to various stud dogs dont get me wrong the choosing the right stud plays a massive part but i think the bitch plays a bigger roll look at fly eve seagull swoop cindy to name a few they have consistantly produced litters of top class dogs 2 Quote Link to post

I heard an interview on Radio Four last week about Golden Horn, the 2015 Derby winner, who's been retired to stud. So far he's covered 147 mares at £60k a pop, 93% (from memory, I think) of which have conceived. I couldn't help wondering at the time I was listening, how many of those mares were top class and how many were 'also rans' whose owners were hoping for great things by using a top stallion.... 1 Quote Link to post
stone rose 353
i wonder how much frankel would be did golden horn win the arc or was it a race at the breeders 2 Quote Link to post
Dave6592 51
i wonder how much frankel would be did golden horn win the arc or was it a race at the breeders Frankels stud fee starts at £100,000 probably more after Cunco bolted up on debut. Majoris ran since and looked to need further imo. Cunco out of a very good mare Chrysanthemum. Be interesting to see when he's been put to an also ran what he produces. Then again, some 'also rans' can produce top quality stuff I'm sure. 1 Quote Link to post
