walshie 2,804
Can anyone give me ballpark suggestions for kit to get for a bit of boat fishing? Not wreck or deep-sea. All I want to do is drag some mackerel feathers round behind the boat for a couple of hours. I've looked at some stuff and all the sea rods are a certain "class" like 20/30lb etc. What sort of rod would I need and what length? And would I need a multiplier or fixed spool reel? And does the weight used depend on how fast you are going? What sort of weight should I be looking at roughly? Ta. Quote Link to post

Ta. hi, i would buy a 7ft 20/30lb boat rod which you like the feel of, along with a level wind multiplier with 20lb line straight through, no leader line needed, weight wise, 6oz plain weights are usually used, basic tackle like swivels, weight clip swivels, scissors, knife etc.....and feathers (obviously), but try and get the plain white feathers if you can, you don't need all these fancy plastic shinny traces for mackereling, just plain white feathers are best, regards to the rod and reel, try and buy a good brand make, instead off a cheapy combo, that way it will last you a good few years if you just rinse them off, the cheaper stuff tends to corrode more easier, hope this helps and happy fishing......let us know how you get on..... 7 Quote Link to post
Rabid 1,936
Agree with most everything Tilly has said, apart from the rod, for what you want I wouldn't go that heavy, I would go for an 'ugly stick' 12-15lb, they won't break the bank, and have an awesome rep, well rated by most serious boat fishers that don't spend hundreds and hundreds on rods. For example, I use a 12lb class ugly stick for wrecking, cod, pollock and bass upro 20lb, don't want a 30lb broomstick, I don't even go that heavy for conger In fact, if your serious about it, I probably have one or two old rods sitting around you could have, let me know if interested and I will have a look. Reel, do NOT get an ugly stick multiplier, they really are crap unlike their rods. Something like a penn 535. 4 Quote Link to post

Something like a penn 535. i think when it comes down to the choice of a rod, it's a preference thing, the ones i have are 20/30lb which i really like, i picked them up from a game fair a while back, they are...fighter "S" boat, made by D.A.M from Germany, i payed £12 each for them, and no word of a lie...they have a superb bite detection, slim, a nice stiffish butt/mid section, light as a feather, good quality eyes, with a good tip action, i can't praise them enough, and i couldn't believe the price, the days of broomsticks are long gone now..... iv'e found in the past a 12lb class rod a bit to wippy for my liking, but hay-ho it's what your preferences are...if a 12lb rod suits your needs, then fair enough...but, just my opinion, a 20/30lb rod is a better all rounder, Quote Link to post

walshie 2,804
Confused.com. I'm a leftie, but I fish "right-handed". Fixed spool reels have the handle on the left for right-handed fishing. Multipliers seem to have it on the right? I'd prefer it on the left, so would that mean a left hand or right handed reel? hoggysreels 76
You can get right and left handed multiplier reels .. Quote Link to post
walshie 2,804
You can get right and left handed multiplier reels .. Apparently so. It's a minefield for the uninitiated. So is one with the handle on the left classed as left or right handed? Or does it just say left hand wind, right hand wind etc? Quote Link to post
Rabid 1,936
You know boat rods with multipliers are used 'upside down' ? Reel on top not underneath mate. Quote Link to post

hoggysreels 76
If you mount the multiplier on the rod .. "rod eyes facing towards you" and the multiplier hand is to the left, its a leftie .. if its on the left and you need to turn the handle backward to retrieve line ... you have a right handed multiplier reel upside down .. this only happens with open faced multiplier reels "non levelwind" .. What you need to consider is .. What depth of water are you going to fish .. What type of fishing will you be doing? Botton ledger e.g. Ray, Bullhuss, Tope or flats, Plaice, Sole, Flounder, Dabs .. or drifting for Turbot .. fishing rock marks after Brean or chasing the mini species TPB etc. What is the tidal pull What ground are you likely to be fishing What type rod do you intend matching the redl to What type line are you going to use What will you mainly be fishing, uptide or down tide. How much you intend spending on a reel. How often are you going to be using the reel. Are you ging to pleasure boat fish or competition fish Dont be tempted buying a combo setup from the Angling online centres ... select your rod carefully and match it to a good reel .. l personally prefer multipliers but l also use egg beaters when its benefical to do so "fast fishing for mini's etc .. Yoi dont want to buy dud inappropriate gear for your kind of fishing .. do you just intend on boat fishing? .. do you occasionally beach fish also ? Ive fished for 50 years, many of those off a boat. I boat competition fish. I also had a fishing reel business .. l seldom sell reel now. I use to stock about 300 multiplier reel at any one time .. l sold them world wide "rare collectors reels" America, Australia, Japan, Grermany, Ireland etc .. anyhow, have a think what you going to do fishing wise than consider what is best for success fishing wise ..think twice, buy once .. good luck fella 1 Quote Link to post
