johnny boy68 11,726
Olympic professional boxing vote is criticised by Carl Frampton http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/boxing/36425046 I've always considered the Olympics to be something that was one of the pinnacles of the sport for amateurs. What's your thoughts?
pesky1972 5,365
Leave things as they are.., no pros at the olympics. You'd never get all the top pros there anyway, so I it would wind up being neither one thing or the other. Haven't looked into it at all but it just looks like another money grabber by the IOC. I'd also guess that boxers are tied into promotions contracts, with potential for the top fighters to earn vast purses. I would doubt they'd see anywhere near that fighting the same opponents at the olympics. Non starter for me, and hopefully common sense will prevail and they don't go breaking something that it seems to me works well.
kanny 20,939
I was talking to a lad today about this .. he said at the last Olympics the football teams had professional ringers playing in them ..I'm not a footy fan so not sure if its right...I always thought professionals arnt allowed to enter the games. gnasher16 30,535
Purely from a competetive point......what pro fighter is going to want to fight at amateur level....what happens when an amateur gets badly hurt......what happens when an amateur beats a pro ( which will happen ) what is their to gain from all this.........ive got a good idea how about putting all fight sports together and last man standing is the winner......likewise all runners from marathon runners to sprinters in a race.............absolute nonsense !
AKA-BRINDLE 879
Bit complicated to get me head round...but would of been good to see some of the pros in with the Cuban boxers that couldnt/wouldnt turn pro...remember years back when they was offering Felix Savon fortunes to get a fight on with Mike Tyson in his prime...maybe it could of been a good way to of got them fights on??...always brought a top class boxing team to the Olympics the Cuban's
arcticgun 4,548
Think it's daft plain n simple Olympics = amateur boxing pinnacle something to aspire too before turning pro this will cause more hassle than it's worth likely down too the stupid amounts countries plough into the olympics all the fireworks n bollocks so trying to recoup cash poorly thought out and not good for boxing IMHO
gnasher16 30,535
Todays top amateurs in England ( probably the same in Russia, maybe even Cuba ) are virtually pros without the finanical rewards of being a pro......they get all the funding, dieticians,s&c etc that pros get.......the facility up in Sheffield is state of the art where fighters will live in and have as much if not more benefits than pros.......but the bottom line is most are amateurs because they are not good enough to be pros.......its a completely different sport requiring completely different qualities. A 9 minute point scoring exercise compared to a 36 minute slugfest......it would be dangerous, pointless and another nail in the coffin for Olympic sport. pesky1972 5,365
As has been pointed out, the format is totally different. As an example, take the recent Khan v Canelo fight. If it was fought in the amatuer format Khan would likely have prevailed..., whereas we all know how it ended. So who's the better boxer?
JDHUNTING 1,817
Stupid I agree, but that said I dont see the pros going there and wiping the floor with ams and who wouldnt want to see a young english am KO amir khan representing pakistan.

Putting their experienced adult fighters in with kids. True they have skills but was far from a level playing field.
DogFox123 1,379
Looking bad for Ali . FairPlay to him he has stood staunch in the face of adversity for 25-30 years. Yes but he's done well to battle on for so long with that terrible illness.
