Pea Field Woodies

Recommended Posts

It is now 11 days since the peas were drilled and I have been up to check every day for pigeon activity, nothing up until last night. A few birds were floating around so this morning I went up for a session over decoys, the wind was so strong in was just untrue mixed in with showers, what a good start. I sat in the car for about an hour but no drop in the wind at all, then the rain came down good style.

Aborted mission.

I have just been back up, just 6 birds walking the field with no other bird movement so back home for a coffee. Depending on the weather tomorrow, I will try again but this time along with the rifle, I am taking the shotgun so no matter if the wind is as bad, if they are there, I will still be in with a chance of a few birds.

We are supposed to be in British Summertime not the start of October which is what it felt like today with temperatures to suit.

The weather has been really sunny here Phil but like you said....so bloody windy for a June day.

It's been one of those "I don't have enough bloody mill dots for windage" days.

Well, let's hope it's calmed down for you in the morning pal.?

I have been carefully watching the activity from the pigeon, well I would if any turned up but I gave it a couple of hours but apart from the odd crow well out of range, nothing to be seen.

A change of plan was called for so I went round to the warren pasture where there is a deep valley lined with trees which had quite a number of mixed corvids resting in the trees. I put up around 20 or 30 crows as I worked my way round the track. The sun was now taking the temperature way up and I assume the crows were simply staying out of the heat.

Once settled under a large tree giving me some shade, a pair of pheasants strolled past no more than 20yds away, bet they don't do that in season.

The day was not lost unlike the two woodies and two crows which were all boiler room kills falling right down into the valley and if you saw how severe the valley sides were and totally overgrown, you would know why I didn't get them. I actually contemplated getting a dog but on reflection, I not so sure it would be safe for a dog. Well at least I reduced a few pests but would prefer to pick up the dead quarry.

I would love to be able to get down to the bottom of thhis valley as nobody has walked the valley floor for a great many years so it could be a special place to shoot.
