NEWKID 27,042
Your right Walshie, we've had lots of good players over the years but never gelled as a team for some reason. The side that reached the semis and got beaten by germany in 96, would be the last side that really clicked IMO. But this side is very young and has a chance if it clicks, there is no easy game once your at these big tournaments, but you've got to find a way to win. England did play very well IMO last night, kept the ball, attacked with a bit of pace, and defended well (until the last 10mins), they seemed to get a bit panicked at the end. I think it's difficult to compare international rugby with football as well, there are regularly "smaller" teams beating the bigger sides, but how often are the likes of New Zealannd or Australia beaten by inferior nations? Lab 10,979
Vardy must be fuxking fuming not getting a chance after the year he's had. Too true. I'm a firm believer in man management of players is one of the best advantages in a football team. So by sitting Vardy on the bench when it was clear to see they were making chances but not converting could be a serious failure. Vardy now will get a game with all the pressure on him and if he tries to hard and plays bad he will be crucified. When footballers are at the top of there game they must play. johnny boy68 11,726
England created lots of chances, crazy they didn't give Vardy a chance against the 2 60 year old Russian centre backs lol. What's with Kane taking corners, would've thought a number 9 would be in the box? Thought Dier and Rooney had great games.

Agree with all of that John, just a shame they never kept the pressure on for the last 10 mins, Milner was entirely the wrong choice, should of kept them on the back foot and bought on Vardy. Also the shape wasn't nearly as good when Rooney went off, he played very well and knitted it all together, altough I did think Wilshere looked bright when he came on.
pesky1972 5,204
Thought England played well. On another day they might have taken another chance or two. Think they'll qualify okay on that form, and I think Vardy will get his chance once England play a team that want to attack them and maybe leave space behind for JV to do what he does best. Frankie Boyle on England's performance; "Surprisingly poor finishing from a nation where most people can hit a French copper with a plastic chair from about 30 yards". He's got it about right ??

Unless your captain is injured or having a mare then I can't understand taking him off either, some strange decisions by Hodgson last night.
gnasher16 30,022
I thought we played well and controlled the game......I havent watched the game back on telly yet but the atmosphere in the ground was totally confident,it was almost easy......we should of taken our chances and been at least 2 up going into the last 15 minutes but even at 1 nil we was cruising...........so why did Hodgson feel the need to f**k about with the team and go all defensive inviting them on ?......he is such a negative manager nothing was wrong or looked like going wrong so why change it.......Milner and Wiltshere in my opinion were brought on for legs in midfield in a defensive get behind the ball way....which straight away makes us fall deeper and deeper....had we carried on as we were it probably would of ended 2 nil where Russia started pushing on and leaving gaps at the back yet the Hodge had taken our creative players off ! Very good performance i thought but we wont go far with this negative outlook.

Exactly as I saw it Gnash, when a teams on the back foot keep them there, I'm not a fan on Milner anyway so my heart sank when I saw him coming on!!

You probably understand a players mind better than me mate but upon seeing those 2 come on wouldnt other players automatically go into a more defensive mindset ?......Walker and Rose looked a threat going forward all game but soon as them subs were made they just stopped.......it must give the opposition the bit of confidence they need when they see that with 10 minutes to go surely ? Rooney going off changed that IMO, they knew they could bomb on and he would find them, he hardly played a bad ball all game. But also they would've been trained to see a game out, sit in for the last 10 and see it out, now if we were playing Germany, Spain etc and it was open for 70 mins and we'd nicked the goal is understanding it. But the Russians were on the back foot all game, a Vardy or Rashford would keep them there, the fullbacks should of kept the cover on for the last 10 ( so if 1 attacks the other sits in) but changing the whole team shaoe to defend a 1-0 lead was a big mistake IMO. Still lots of positives though, on another night we'd of been 3 up and the changes would've been get on Vardy and Rashford and enjoy yourself
