woz 260
i use 223 and my mate uses 222 we regularly hit out to 250 yards.iv seen some staggeringly long shots with 243.....think the 22.250 is a good round but they hammer barrels and you get alot of throat damage.i wanted a gun to last 25 years because im tight.... spudlington 3
Used 223 on targets and used 243 on Chamois but never done any proper centrefire target stuff. Very interested in long-range target and fox and hope to do some with my 6.5x55 deer rifle during the off-season,. How do you rate the 22-250 as a fox gun? Quote Link to post

Hello mate....It could be that you are a little ticked off with the recent change in the law that left out Roe with the .22 centrefire.....I know I certainly am. This of course leads people to the .243 in many cases for use on Charlie, right through to the Reds. This becomes a practical and financial decision for many and I believe it moves too far away from what is the right tool for the job because of this. The .243 kicks all right as it has its origins in the .308 case, but in simple terms you will find it a little harder than your .222 but it is certainly not a heavy kick. For some of the reasons mentioned above I am in the final stages of selling my .243. Don't get me wrong I like it, but, my .223 deals with Charlie and small deer and my .308 deals with all the other deer (some suggest it for the Red over the .243 anyway) and boar. Simply don't need/can't afford all these tools when they do stupid things with the law. The Government/Police/Home Office seems quite happy for me to shoot Roe with my .308 as well as Wild Boar....f*****g stupid if you ask me but there we are. I would much rather deal with the Roe with my .223 (its on my ticket for Roe in Scotland anyway...it's a mad world). But whichever way you look at it I don't need the .243 anymore as the .223 and .308 does it all. I also have a collection of air rifles, rimfires and shotguns all housed in 3 Cabinets so it comes down to space, money and usage. I am not a gun collector, I use them all and if I find I'm not then something goes! Cheers Deker Edited December 4, 2007 by Deker Quote Link to post
SNAP SHOT 194
Have to say, when it comes down to what can we all afford, how much will we use it ,how often, then things start gettin into perspective, for a good allrounder the .243 will do you no wrong as long as you keep a sensible head on your shoulders, deer wise it takes red no problem i keep shots within the 200 to 240 odd when shooting deer, and for fox anything goes its all down to your ability. At long range charlie... personally taken fox to 420yards at night being the longest shot so far with about 10 others in around the 400 mark....no BS. and i'm not trying to blow my own trumpet......its taken years to get to where i am now skill wise, and plenty of time at range work gettin to know the bullets...so i say for a one gun man the .243 has the lot.... I think you either missread or didn't get to the end of the line, what I said was:- The .243 kicks all right as it has its origins in the .308 case, but in simple terms you will find it a little harder than your .222 but it is certainly not a heavy kick. I think that is pretty accurate! You are making some incredible .243 home loads if they are like shooting an air gun . Cheers Deker Quote Link to post
