morton 5,368
Just on the Deerhound craic, when i was up Scotland a fortnight ago i visited where Miss Anastasia Noble lived & her Ardkinglas Deerhounds on the banks of Loch Fyne,i visited for no other reason other than to say id been where part of Deerhound history had been made... Many, many years ago i ventured North with a mucker seeking a Saluki from the Shap area,at the time the Deerhound Coursing club, because of diminishing membership, was taken over by the Saluki ownership, the Deerhounds were still allowed to compete,do any folk on here have an input into any of that? and how did it fizzle out.The saluki he brought back was a dumb fecker, killed hares and bunnys with aplomb, then spent at least 10 minutes refusing to retrieve each and every one,for 7 years. 1 Quote Link to post

What's the deer hounds favorable land to run on ?? Having never seen a genuine pure run other than on film, I've not got much knowledge of them. Ive seen a few hybrid lurchers with a strong DH influence and they were canny dogs on edible quarry and would get in to foxes but were not out & out fox slaying lurchers.. Quote Link to post

Ive seen a few hybrid lurchers with a strong DH influence and they were canny dogs on edible quarry and would get in to foxes but were not out & out fox slaying lurchers.. The main reason Deerhoundy lurchers gained favour with me is because they could run on the roughest and most unforgiving terrain with the same aptitude that the average lurcher ran on meadow and a fox was pish in their repertoire. When a long gruelling gallop took fence, wall, gate, grass and heather into consideration few lurchers could live within the average Deerhoundys scope or aptitude. The facts are that the average modernish lurcher is kenelled within its limitations and is seldom tested above such, the jukels that are better tested are often benefited because of the aid of a lamp or 4x4,or hunt bunny,s.The true Deerhoundy is a dog of folklore and romance now,yet the odd un represents the heritage in a favourable illumination, often with a little something in the mixture e.g.Cur.Fecking useful mutts, especially if you throw the romance and chance factor out of the breeding. low plains drifter 10,485
Probably not LPD,back in the 80's the Deerhound types were quite popular in fact the 1st lurcher i ever owned was one.. Got my first one in 93 he was a deerhound cross, and I saw a few others including the good first cross D X G's that were popular back then Quote Link to post

I seen the Andy baron ones when he 1st started with them and what a pile of crap,he seen a market for them and took it,we used to have bills stuff for years as you could get them all the time up here in the north.they all did what they were made for our last one we got off a pest control bloke from fishguard Wales,he had the pics on his wall what the greyhound had took and what the deerhound had took but that was back in 1987 I think or earlier.but like said it sourcing good ones now and a shame bill stopped producing them. 3 Quote Link to post
