Back Garden Bushing

Quite a lot of my paid jobs are in gardens. And for some reason they nearly all contain box parterres/knot gardens. And I've discovered that these make fantastic holding cover for rabbits, and I regularly find at least one in them, but they can be a hell of a challenge for the dogs to catch because when they do eventually break cover they never have far to run till they're in cover again. My terrier's worth her weight in gold here, and has become very good at working them methodically, but it's hard work for her as she constantly has to keep jumping 'hedges'.

 

I was doing another one of these garden jobs last week on a very hot day. By the time we were finished the dogs were shattered - the heat was really draining on them. I filmed a short bit of footage on the way back to the car that gives you an idea of how hard the little dog has to work. Bear in mind this was at the end of the day when she was already knackered.

Raymond - the bunnies love that garden. It's absolutely massive and I reckon it takes somewhere between 2 - 3 hours to systematically work every single flower border and patch of cover with the dogs. And that's before I do anything with the ferrets. I caught 5 last week -

 

 

and when I was there a couple of months back had 7. But it doesn't matter how thoroughly I clear the garden, sooner or later they move in from the surrounding fields that are hooching with the things.

 

Gaz - it's great fun. I really enjoy doing gardens as they can be very challenging. And the owners are always chuffed to bits to see you catching. I did one a couple of weeks ago with a mate. We were sat in the boot of my car having a sarni at lunchtime and I noticed how the terrier was paying a lot of attention to a huge horse chestnut surrounded by bushes that was no more than 10 foot from where the car was parked. I wandered over to see what the big attraction was and found a little three holer at the base of the tree, hidden away from view by all the bushes. I told my mate that once we'd finished our lunch we'd stick a ferret in there as the terrier was keen on it. No sooner had I finished the sentence than the owner came out of the house to see how we were getting on. I told him how many we'd caught up to that point and said I'd just discovered the little bury under the horse chestnut and would have a go at that shortly. "Whereabouts?" he asks. "Right there" I says, pointing. "Really? Show me", he says. So I took him over and pointed it out. At that exact moment there was a mad yipping from the terrier and a frantic crashing of undergrowth, and a rabbit shoots out of the bushes about 20 yards away heading flat out for the 3 holer we were stood beside. A few yards behind the rabbit the terrier smashes into the open but the lurcher was already on the case and flying straight at us up the rabbit's arse. He literally brushed our legs as he snaffled it up right at our feet. The homeowner's jaw dropped and his eyes popped wide open. Then he couldn't stop raving about how amazing it was and how quickly it had all happened blah, blah, blah.

 

The timing was absolutely impeccable. Pure chance, of course, and as long as I live I don't suppose the same thing will ever happen but by God did it impress the homeowner!

One of the best ferreting perms I've ever had is a back garden belonging to a barrister it's great fun isn't it krawnden . He let's you use any method you want to rid him of what he calls fluffy vandals
