I'm guessing this was a case of letting the barrel slip from the fellow's grasp and coming back up under spring tension. It's a usual symptom, with a split through the grip. I bet the barrel is going well up Northwards too

Looks like a good job so far mac, like Simon "pianoman" my money is on it working fine one way or an other. If the screws do not work then hardwood dowelling will be taken out of the armoury.
