Dan McDonough 560
The Vitesse and Quixand and later Quixandz whippets are the fastest over here right now. That doesn't always mean they are the best hunters. If you don't have a little Lyth in there the dogs they'll break a lot easier. There is a cirlcle of people that are making exceptionally fast whippets over here right and it's really fun to have had a few of those dogs. Here is the dog that did the 10.8 seconds. The dogs name is Ringdove Black Adder. https://whippet.breedarchive.com/animal/view/548 There is getting to be a small but growing group of guys that are slowly getting some of that blood out from the whippet women. It's not easy. The breed (even the racers) are dominated by fat, old, socialist, women that have a deffinate opinion of howthe world should work and are even more opinionated about who is allowed to buy their dogs. It's a shame because I know a lot of guys that treat their whippets like little princes and princesses at home and in how they feed and care for their dogs but because they are hunting their dogs, the above group hates them and by in large, will not sell a dog to them. Over the last few years I have owned 6 whippets of various breeding and they are absolutely fantastic dogs. Most of them would fight whatever you put them to and fight to win even when the going got very tough. They'll try to catch anything and that's a lot of fun for what you guys called a general moocher. I was very surprised when, in top shape, I was seeing speeds out of a couple of the fastest whippets I measured that were well above what I had been told they could do. Conditioning is everything, as long as they have the proper fuel to do the job. If someone made a crossbreed that maintained nearly all of the character, speed and agility of the best whippets I've seen but was able to add tough skin and a tough coat to go along with it, I don't see where a pair or a trio of them couldn't take all game here from coyote on down. The difficult thing is to maintain that blistering speed. A while ago I noticed that some strains of jagdterriers, mostly American bred strains, were way faster than they should have been. That is the route I'm taking in making something that suits a hard hunter that wants a dog that is whippet fast. It's going to take a while to get the right mix but it seems pretty obvious that it can be done from what I've seen so far. As of right now I'm on the first cross of this journey but I'm no rookie and I can see it working out in the future. I'll be mixing it with a little stag and a little collie along the way but maintaining the whippet abilty. I'm doing this at the same time while breeding a standard sized lurcher bred for the American range of game. What ever comes of all of this, I'm having one hell of a good time doing it. 3 Quote Link to post
Dan McDonough 560
The whippet in my avatar is my favorite of the bunch I had. Here is a picture of his littermate brother: And my old Mikey dog: https://whippet.breedarchive.com/animal/view/166894 Edited May 15, 2016 by Dan McDonough 1 Quote Link to post
Dan McDonough 560
The first of the whippet x jagdterrier cross is this one, named Diesel: Obviously, the size will have to come up from here. Diesel is about 18" right now and will likely make 19 when he's done growing. I want to eventually end up around 21"-24". 3 Quote Link to post
the pikey poacher 1,157
I remember a while back there was a similair thread of guy who said he'd clocked his dog around 40mph and everyone laughed at him. I've never clocked any of my dogs but it's a fact that hates are the fastest land mammal in Britain and can reach speeds of up to 40mph. Any decent hare dog can get up to a hare flat out and turn it. Therefore, surely it is logical to believe that a decent lurcher can run at speeds of over 40mph? I may be wrong or missing something but it's a point. i chased a hare across a field a few years back and i clocked him at 48 mph for a good 40 seconds so i recon a lurcher does 50 to 55 and a pure greyhound 58 to 60 jmo but i think im right atb pp Quote Link to post
