Shot Placement. U.s .vs Uk

Hello all ! Just like to state I'm very envious of deer stalking in the UK. But I've notice that y'all are a bit different with your shot placements. In the U.S. it's mostly righ behind the shoulder in the boiler room ( heart lung ) or neck shots to a lesser degree. How ever I've noticed in the U.K. it's much more head shooting ( which is extremely taboo,for better words, here in the states ) and spine shots. Any particular reason for this ?

It's the difference in hunting culture. If I understand correctly you chaps conserve your game populations for sustainable harvests by citizens for personal use. Whereas in the UK deer populations are either privately managed as an economic sporting asset or simply culled for economic reasons. For those that are simply culling deer to control their numbers and sell the carcass to a game dealer it's not uncommon for head shots to be taken where possible to get a better price.

Why is a head shot frowned upon is it not a clean kill or a clean miss apart from shooting a jaw off maybe it would be interesting to hear peoples views a badly placed heart and lung shot can be messy too Even though its a larger target.

There is a well known and very long established Game Dealer located between you and me (but a bit closer to me) who pays higher for head shot!

 

Its simple economics, better looking carcass with more edible meat!

The times I've heard "with a head shot you either kill it or its a clean miss", complete BS as you said yourself, except when you shoot its jaw off etc, etc!

 

If you are a little off with a heart shot you are still likely to do considerable damage with the expanding ammo you will be using, and the odds are it isn't going that far!

True a jaw shot is a nasty injury that the animal will survive and probably take weeks to die of starvation but i seen lads taking so called heart/lung shots and i dont think they were even sure where the organs are situated and i seen gut shots and broken shoulders/high on the leg as a result which is just as bad i think a lot depends on the man behind the gun. I also seen lads with excellant shots on paper targets that couldnt shoot live game through nerves. I think your right though the heart/lungs leave more scope for human error.

Game dealers here are 2.30 per kilo head/neck shot and 1. per kilo shoulder shot so on a 50 kilo fallow its worth 25 euro more to the money men. Since the dealers started paying good money the deer population has been hammered with numbers down 75% in some areas within 5years.

Not really got time to go into detail.

 

In my personal experience it is f***ing hard, nigh on impossible to follow up a deer that has had it's jaw blown off unless you have a really good dog or get lucky.

 

A blown off jaw, throat shot etc will take 2 or 3 days to die and this occurs through dehydration.

 

Blown off legs and nicked spines are similar but can be survivable.

 

Gut shots are fatal within an hour, certainly 2.

 

Mostly the rest of the fuxk ups in chest shooting a good dog will find dead but in a mess.

 

Chest shooting is more humane.
