Rapid Outing

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't normally post a foray with just the one rabbit and not much to say, but I went out this evening and blooded my newly acquired Rapid at the manor house.

Creeping and crawling about, I saw nothing, I couldn't believe there wasn't game out on full force but it must be down to the awkward weather. I did bag the one though, my only shot of the evening, from 7 til 9, gusting wind to the right, ranged at 43 yards, inch left to the base of the ears... ffffffffffut'ping... eye popping :D No hold over with the little calibre, and it just crumpled.

Not to young, not to old, and not a flammin Doe, thank god.

Well done, one is always enough for me. Rabbit is a nice size and gun looks like it handles well. Rabbit looks like he was surprised.

Ha. Wish id of mentioned something along those lines :)

Shooting Rez. :good:

What are your thoughts on the Rapid compared to your HW 100 ?

20 yrs of technology difference I know but the Rapids have a following - "why" in comparison ?

HW wont go bust in a million years - can anyone say why Theoben did as their rifles are damn good .

I've always loved Rapids. Since a nipper I've always wanted one. It's been implanted on me all through my shooting hobby from reading John Darling with his in 90's Air Gunners. Now I've had three, this one is the best of the lot, but, it could be a better example to be honest. It's hard to find unmolested rifles in this day and age and if you do, they command a small fortune. Wish I'd of bought one when the last were going off the line, but that's hindsight. I think it's the best, rugged bolt action air gun ever been available... It's works and sounds clunky, like a Kar98 :)

It's ok for a 98 model... now I've found the right pellet, FTT's 4.52, which are rare, it'll group pellet on pellet, literally but you do get the odd wild flyer. It has character, like all Rapids. I would say it's perhaps not as accurate as my 100 was, but it's accurate enough for me, and it's so marginal I'm happy with it. I aim to strip it in the near future, but need to get my head around valves and such first. Springers take down, fine, but compression and air flow I'm a bit new too.

You should see a lot of it in the future. Thing is, with my 100 I always went for the HM, now I have the old problem, which to take.

As an edit, I was only ever gonna replace my 100 with another .177 to be honest, so when I saw this Mk 1 about, I snatched it up even though I knew it was never originally chambered in the smaller caliber, obviously I knew it had been apart and that's the thing, I took a risk, an expensive one, but again, that's part of the rapid ownership. And perhaps thats why they have the following, once you get a good one, they last longer than the shooter and stay as good as the day they left the factory... A PCP HW80 kinda thing.
