I hear you on the more practice. In fact it was my friend that suggested I bring it, even if I just zero it to 30 ish and see what I'm like before taking a shot at anything living. At least then I'll get some longer range practice. I can't shoot any further at the moment as that's what I'm limited to. I tend to be a quick learner, so here's hoping I'm on the money with the practice shots. If I feel like I'm capable and my practice shots are good, I'll pick my opportunity very carefully. I'm not there to just shoot at everything that moves. I'm not even sure I could pull the trigger with live quarry in my sights anyway. The experience of being there, watching them through the sight and even just spectating my friend taking the shots will be invaluable I feel. I want to learn, gather experience and knowledge and I have this opportunity to do so. We're going to be in a "hide" of sorts, low slung tarp with camo netting. We have plenty of fields and stables to utilise. So maybe I'll get lucky and have an opportunity of something inside my current experience limit. If not, it's no biggy. I have a lifetime to learn. I just want to get out and be a part of it.

 

The Remington was a bargain I couldn't pass over. I'm aware its at the lower end of the spectrum but I'm in love with it. It will be a long, long time, if at all, I get the chance to upgrade. So I best get to making this thing an extension of myself. The guy I bought it from is a comp shooter and supposedly a good one. I've known him a while and he's told me it's shooting at about 11.5 and should be good to 35-40 with practice. So I can't see myself needing anything else for the near future at least.

 

 

 

If you've never shot targets further than 15 yards and rifle isn't even zeroed at the distance you expect to shoot quarry, I'd take the rifle, zero in then practice getting within that distance of your quarry. You'll still have a great day and be prepared for the next `live` trip.

great to see you taking to it and also have a level head about shooting live quarry and putting them ahead of just 'having a pop' and causing injuries.

 

All the best with your shooting and good luck if you decide to carry on going after the rabbits and rats! I'm sure you will get the bug and soon will expand your quarry list!

Hopefully the pics are viewable. Getting to grips with this forums coding is a pain in the neck hah.

 

The permission is for pest control, so yes, there are small rabbits but it's a stables who's horses are its income generator, so can't risk them breaking legs etc. I hope that doesn't anger anyone.

Mate, rabbits is rabbits is rabbits. I must admit though, I did feel odd when I first shot a little one but, my best permission is a big rugby club. They can't have 18 stone blokes running full pelt and breaking an ankle in a rabbit hole. They all have to go.

 

I must admit though, I do spare the really small ones that I see in the tree lines.

 

The larger juveniles are my favourite. They make a nice dinner

Well today was a long, long day. It's drizzled all day so has been utterly miserable. We arrived before lunch and baited up around the stables for the rats. They're sneaky buggers and stayed well away from us all afternoon. A couple were spotted but were up in the rafters and not able to be dealt with safely.

 

The rabbits are also, very, VERY wary and they were off as soon as they caught a glimpse of you.

 

We did manage to get into range of a couple of rabbits and 3 of them duly fell. I got 2 of them. Humanely. I'm pretty chuffed. I do have some photos so I'll get them sorted out but it's been a very long day and I've got a million and one things to do. Just wanted to quickly update you.

Its been said above, after the gun and you are sorted, the only REAL way is to get out there and do it, experience counts for an awful lot.

I wasn't sure I could actually pull the trigger with live quarry in my sights but it wasn't as bad as I expected. Struggled a little with the first one but after that it was second nature. They all got put to use as well, food and rabbit pelt pouches.

There are many like that.

 

I am Secretary of a fullbore Club at Bisley, and there are a couple of members who can put them in the same hole at 200 yards, but put a bunny 20 yards in front of them and they completely miss every time!

 

Such is life, we are not all cut out for this!

Was purely because it was the first time looking down the sights at anything alive, let alone thinking about pulling the trigger. Had a sharp but very brief argument in my head and went for it. Don't think I could do it for sport but I thoroughly enjoyed doing it as a "job".
