stormyboy 1,352
One tip- don't use wd40 on mole traps! ? had every trap backfilled after using it until I cleaned and weatherd them. Quote Link to post
swarmcatcher 15
Meant to say that I do use a bit of nut oil for lube, but do wonder if that sometimes entices them thru the side of the cubby for the BG's Quote Link to post
stormyboy 1,352
I've heard of something called speed dip-what is it and what does it do? Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,112
Has anybody really ever done a proper test on traps ,,that have still had oil on them.... Most trappers remove the oil,,,because it's what has been taught,,,but has anybody really tested it,,, Quote Link to post

Most trappers remove the oil,,,because it's what has been taught,,,but has anybody really tested it,,, I am quite convinced it makes no difference with moles, as I have used traps straight out the box with small adjustments, I am going to try spray/ aerosol waxoil on them at some point, as for other traps I always weather them, Quote Link to post
Phil Lloyd 10,738
Caught all manner of quarry with new traps, fresh out of the factory,..greasy, smelly, oily bits of shiny metal.. However,...my gut instinct and old style beliefs has always urged me to clean off any excess oil residues, etc...just in case... Edited May 10, 2016 by Phil Lloyd 1 Quote Link to post
3175darren 1,100
Speed dip is a treatment for dipping traps, to preserve them/ help keep them in good order, as said earlier no one in England do there own, it's all imported from across the pond and expensive, sorry never checked above post when it came in, Edited May 10, 2016 by 3175darren Quote Link to post
stormyboy 1,352
Thanks Darren. I think treating my putanges may help keep rust at bay and keep the prongs smooth. As I said, I used wd40 and had no end of backfills after. Maybe coincidence or possibly user error! Quote Link to post
EDDIE B 3,166
http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/167865-trap-dye-step-by-step-guide/page-2 Can anyone explain the benefits - does it reduce rust, does it assist in reaction speed, guessing it may help catch rate - no glinting metal There were a couple of methods highlighted 14acre black trap dye - heat will have an effect on spring speed B&Q brick and patio cleaner - does not stop rust Green Cuprinol - made some sense possibly potasium permaganate - to weather them Anybody got some knowledge on this? It certainly keeps traps running fast, and smooth! Like any coating on metal, i believe it will prolong the life of whatever you use it on. There are many types of dip, some cheap, some expensive, and some work better than others. I used to use spray paint, but now use a mix of Rustolium and spirits. I find this perfect for my type of trapping. Quote Link to post

Wolfdog91 7,003
I think I could put input on this ! Over here most people only speed dip their water traps because they retain such a bad scent from the gas (y'all call gasoline petrol right ?) one of the most common and favorite methods if treating traps over here is waxing and dying. Most of the time traps are boils for a few hours in Longwood dye and water. The dye turns acidic I guess (I'm sorry I don't completely understand the entire molecular process So forgive me ) and dyes the metal black or reddish Brown depending on the dye. Then you wax the traps whichever is where you have a separate pot with melted paeafan wax. You dunk the straps in for a few seconds the hang them and let dry. Now you also hay your prepared trap dips. FULL METAL JACKET,Dakota Line, formula One etc. Basically with these all you do is dip and let dry over 24hr. You also have a rustolum mixture a lot if people use. Now what I don't and a lot of others do is simply spray paint your traps with some dull spray paint. It works excellent on snares ! I'll go over to trapperman.com and find y'all some links from our archives. Quote Link to post

A lot of US water trappers use it, and JD on here uses it too, and so I gave it a go, and happy with the results. Quote Link to post
