Giro 2,648
Whenever I am having a shit day I come on here and listen to everyone talking bollocks and it cheers me up no end I wouldnt mind a dog that can chase a hare for 10 mins I would like to see the tape as well Lamping rabbits has got to be one of the easiest occupations for a lurcher, most dogs with a bit of greyhound in them can catch decent bags on the lamp, its no great feat. I'll probably get a barrage of abuse for saying that, so I will add that in my defence I lamp small fields where the rabbits are virtually untouched, and its pitch black where I live as its rural, so I maybe have an advantage over the urban masses who are lamping extremely wised-up bunnies on golf courses and urban farms in an amberish glow from the surrounding towns, whilst having to compete with many other lurcherfolk from the same area. But still, I stand by what I say, lamping is one of the easiest ways to procure a few rabbits with a lurcher dog - thats why so many people do it in preference to other dog sports "When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea." I dont like fish  Just agree with the statement lol Link to post
Guest SJM
If you have a camcorder you could play the tape and video it and then upload it onto here so we can see it I tried it with some old video of mine and the quality was ok, watchable enough allthough by no means brilliant. I dont know what would be the best hosting site for the clip though, I use Photobucket but I think it only takes 5 mins of footage, if your clips 10 mins or longer you might have to use another host. I would like to see it as I think I must have been doing something wrong all those years I used thick set, heavy built collie/greyhounds to lamp , they would often take hares in around a minute, sometimes less if it was off a short slip, I used to hate it when they did that I much prefer to see a dog wheeling a hare up and down for ages before catching it, I think it really shows off the dogs ability when they take ages to lift a hare, give me a dog like that rather than one with a quick mouth anyday Link to post
beddiwhuppet 10
use one dog and a big field, with somone at the gate to flush the hare away when it comes near (yes it still had anouther gate to use but obviously decided againt it )and you will get a longer coarse my dogs caught a few more, quicker when using 2 dogs not that i do it anymore ,but again hes not bred for this game, cos rabbits is all you can hunt now but hes not bad at it for his size, but anyway like i said when my bro comes home i will see what i can do with the tape Link to post
Guest markbrick1
i would use a beddy/whippet x collie greyhound, the best of both worlds there, good coat, feet, determination, just enough height! PERFECT! i ve got a 3 yr old bitch of this origin and shes 100% on the bunies Link to post

Guest warren
Doxhope, I just love that little saying!! Back to the thread, the best rabbit dogs (for all-round rabbit work) I have seen have been lurcher to lurcher breeding so I must agree with Millet and Skycat on this one. The superstars have normally been a mixture of; Greyhound, Collie and Deerhound. Thats just my penny's worth, for what its worth. Regards Warren Link to post
Guest SJM
I was extracting the Michael I cant stand a dog that messes around, I like them to get the job done quickly and I rate mouth as one of the most important qualities in a dog, got to have a good fast mouth and a high catch rate. I was taking zee piss Link to post
luke 2
Its the age old argument (horse's for course's pre ban of course, there i go again course this course that ) If you put a Formula 1 car on a rally stage, the suspension would be fooked in a couple of mins, and if you put a rally prepped subaru on a formula 1 circuit,it would be left for dead. Now put them on the ground they were designed for,and there unbeatable.Similar thing with dog's,we outcross sight hounds and lurchers to add different qualities (speed, stamina, strength, spirit, etc) My colliexgrey was a jack of all trades, did everything i asked of her,but she was a master of none, and no world beater, she didn't excell at one particular discipline, but was competent at most.I bought my beddyxwhippet as a rabbit dog, primarily to work with the ferts, and for general mooching.I am just starting to give her a couple of easy slips on the lamp, but i don't expect her to be taking huge bags on the lamp,i could of had a straight whippet, that would probably have caught bunnys all night long, but would it go crashing through brambles,or would it mark buries day in day out, and stand around in the rain/snow all day waiting for bolters?JMO as always. a straight whippet that would take rabbits all night long ive got a whippet bedlingtonx collie gh here 21 and a bit tts, and she will take rabbits as long as there, theres people on these forums have witnessed large nus in one night with that dog and shes got a lot of fuel in the tank dont ever tell me whippets have stamina and there the ultimate rabbit dogs, mark mine could course up to 6 hares in one day mate all ways last back and first to have his breath back and he ran with some good lurchers and caught his share i never ran him much on rabbits but beleive he would have been good for about twenty so i dont know what kind of whippets youve been watching and at least you know what your getting with a whippet a hundred and ten percent commitment you cant say that about all lurchers in my opinion horses for courses springs to mind Link to post

I was taking zee piss yes well at the time he was about a year and a half,so he was new to the game,it was a good work out for him as he didnt know when to judge a turn or a jink, but it happened.thats all im saying he is now 3+ now, and adapted to the game a bit more i guess and yes he does have a good strike on him hes a beddy/whipp wil dive into anything to catch it,and i know they clever fuckers will put the brakes on wether its a good thing or a bad who cares i like it enough of the bitching this always seems to happen,i know collie greys are good dogs we had a 3/4grey1/4border,my dad trained him well wasnt much of a looker but was probably one of the best dogs iv seen work, very obedient in an alround type of way could read the runs but this is about rabbit dogs and all i was stating was what these little demons have to offers as i said before to all those good dog men out there or women Edited December 4, 2007 by beddiwhuppet Link to post
dennned 172
Sorry mate I wasnt trying to be a prick But I just dont believe a Beddie/Whippet could do that time. Ask any of the coursing lads and I bet that theres not 5 dogs in the country that have run a hare for 10 mins solid and there bred to run the hare. Are you sure your not exaggerating a bit it might have 2/3 minutes and just seemed an age. If you put up a video of your dog running the hare ANYWHERE near 10 minutes I will apologise straight away and congradulate you and more so your little dog hi, just a small word, i regularly hunt with , beddiewhuppit, and take it from me this little dog is something else, for his size he has theheart of a lion, and the staying power of a saluki, and just to inform you ,yes it's true he did course that hare for more than 10MINS,nearly killed the little bugger , but thats desperation for you , the stamina is in the dog through strict training of 5> 6 miles trotting behind the jeep on forest roads , so please dont think he was lying because it's true , another thing im not nitpicking , im just telling it as it is Link to post
Guest SJM
Just spat drink all over me screen Do you honestly mean to tell me it chased it for 10 mins and didnt manage to catch the fecking thing? Oh I have really heard it all now Link to post
blackwhippet 7
pure whippet all the time atb fraser if you dont mind your dog shivering and shaking while ferreting These don`t shiver mate, if you get a whippet bred from proper working lines they`re more than a match for any small lurcher as a rabbiting dog Both bitches from Sooty Sam lines This black dog definitely doesn`t shiver either, they`ll work all day all weathers with stamina to spare Link to post
