Lobster. Crab Prawns Ect Advise Needed Cheers

Recommended Posts

Going up the west coast of Scotland at the end of May,,,so as well as a bit of sea fishing I've been looking on line and see you can buy collapsible lobster pots/traps ,,,

So any advise you chaps could give me to aid me catching a few,,,either lobster,,crab,,,and prawns,,,I realise it's a difrent trap for prawns,,,but they seem cheap enough on Amazon ...

So any tips regarding particular traps that are worth buying,,,bait used,,placement of the trap...

Also any advise on difrent fishing baits,,fishing from the rocks,,have used cockles and mackerel strip in the past with some success ,,,using little telescopic spinning typ rods...

Cheers fellas

Apparently you want fresh bait for crab and old smelly bait for lobsters, I got a proper pot of the mrs for my birthday ;) I tried it of raasay in Feb but only caught crabs mainly spiders and a few undersized edibles)

Where abouts are you going tomo? I'm up that way myself and taking a boat with me ;) pm if you prefer

For prawns find a dock wall or pier, bait with fish and check it every 10 or 15 mins. Remove any prawns and crabbs, prawns will always be first to enter but once a crab enters or blocks the entrance no more prawn will go in. You can try setting at low water on a rock mark for crab and lobster but is not great. Be better if you have access to a boat and as mentioned fresh bait for crab, smelly for lobster is often favored. Edited to add those clapSable traps work fine for the prawn if used how I said, leave them in to long though or out in rough seas they will get ripped to shreds. Gaz.

What fish are you targeting tomo? Small light gear I would have a few scratching rigs and some rag for wrasse from the rocks

In the main stuff you can eat,,,when I was a kid and went up there,,,we used to catch a lot of coal fish,,,also a few pollack,,cod ,,,caught sea trout in the estuarys on spinner,,in Aug sept,,,but not sure there around in June ..

Apart from that I want to catch anything,,,just so the kids can have a go....

Don't know what a scratching rig is,,,doh...

We did youse a paternoster type set up,,,,but instead of a lead weight at the bottom,,,,my old man brought a load of truck wheel nuts from work,,,cost feck all,,,then have 3 or 4 hooks above the weight sticking out....

The potters down here use salted fish for the lobsters and fresh fish frames for the crabs. Some nice beaches up near arisaig area you can pitch up on. Only at the side of the road and nobody ever on them.

A scratching rig tomo is a weight, swivel, length then hook. If I was after pollock from rocks I would put a float out and again use rag imo.

My four year old uses a scratching rig, we cast it out about 5 yards and bring it back slowly, she has had wrasse of 4 kinds, gobys, blennies and small pollock like this

got my camper in for mot tomorrow and if it passes, we will be heading somwhere at half term. We've done the west coast of Scotland for the last 2 years but unfortunately early June seems to still be to early for the summer species. We're thinking of heading south this year now TBH
