BGD 6,436
You were drinking the same amount as this bloke on that Drinking to Oblivion doc and he was given 3 months to live having to have 10 litres of fluid drained out of his abdomen every couple of weeks Honestly surprised you didn't get any withdrawal symptoms when you stopped. No shakes or anything? Fair play to you stopping, your bank balance and health will thank you
Gaz_1989 9,539
I have a habit.but not dependent. Same thing mate i think.face to face I could talk about drink and drugs .all I really no I f****d my life and many others by doing so...had jobs earning over a grand a week.I chose beer.f****d tarts over my love of my life fro beer.never needed it but it owned me.can go days or weeks without but it never leaves you.as been said weak minds I always thought alcohol dependency was a bit more than just being weak willed mate. It is an addiction and one you don't kick that easily and certainly don't go for weeks on end without a drink. f**k it off mate and give yourself something else to focus on. Sign up to a fitness challenge or something which will make you train and eat properly.

And I too speak as one who's been there, done that, still occasionally wears the T-shirt ! I could go on about genetic markers, pre-disposition, family history and all the rest of it. But, if you're that close to the edge, it only takes a little nudge and over you go........ It might be a long way down, but it's even further back up !
Parabuteos lad 878
No where near as bad as most reasons on here but I gave up drinking not long after my 18th birthday. Went to a party with a free bar, didn't realise I was drinking as much as i was. Was trying to put my hand up my missus skirt, pee'd all over the floor of the toilet didn't even aim for the actual bog apparently and a few other things, completely out of character to me so didn't see the point in drinking. Much happier for it and wealthier lol
king 11,972
Addiction is all in the mind.if you seriously want to give it up you will if you dont.you want.i had the morning shakes feeling very anxious on edge i Would have 5 cans from 10am till 12 and would then feel normal.and Continue drinking all day every day. But I wanted to stop and I did.no reducing the amount daily just straight stop.it took 4 days to feel back to normal. And as I said I will never have a drop ever again. Any addiction can be kicked i trully believe. But you have got to want to stop.you and only you can make the decision.
Tiercel 6,986
Would the panel regard me as an alcoholic? I drink around 4 pints a night of 5% cider and 6 to 8 pints a day on the weekends. That has been nearly every night for the last 15 years. I have to have blood test every three months and my liver stats come back normal. I work 363 mornings a year up at 6 every morning. If I have to work in the evenings the thought of a drink does not enter into my head. To be honest I hate being drunk, yet love the taste of alcohol. If I do have a few more than usual and feel myself getting tipsy I tend to go straight to bed even if I have poured myself a fresh pint I will just leave it. There have been periods in that time where for tablets I have been taking I have had to lay off the booze, and honestly I did not miss it, that said, once the last tablet had been taken I would be back drinking. TC I wouldn't class you as 1 tiercel.i would say that when it has a negative effect on someone's life and family and causes problems.and the person realises the problems they are creating. But won't stop drinking then I would class that as an alcoholic. Edited April 26, 2016 by king
Blackbriar 8,569
When you think how open this subject is to abuse and name-calling, this discussion has been conducted in a thoughtful and civilised manner, and shown a level of honesty and mutual support that I don't think I've ever seen here before. Well done, gentlemen !
Caravan Monster 323
Must be over two years ago I was about to pick up some cans off the shelf in Tesco and thought to myself I was buying and drinking alcohol out of habit and may as well do without it. Haven't drunk a drop since and don't miss it at all. Pubs round here have been dead for 10+ years, so no loss there. Even though I wasn't a big drinker, it was a surprise not to miss the beer. I'm enough of a space cadet as it is, so not wandering around the next day in a daze from hangover is a bonus, on top of the health and money saving benefits.

TC Seems a fair appraisal, mate. You're the only one who can make that diagnosis. (Or maybe you're just in denial ?) That last bit was a joke........
