Old Peugeot 406 2.0 hdi. I rate anything with hdi engine , the ones I've had in past have been bomb proof. Atb

For on the road motoring,.I find the Astra Vans to be extremely economical and cost effective

I have a octavia 1.9 tdi estate, the older pd engine, fantastic on fuel, often get up to 68 mpg. I don't hammer it mind. Loads of room in it as well.

Vectra 1.9 cdti 150 estate mapped to about 190. Perfect balance of fuel economy and performance. No doubt thirstier than something like the focus 1.6 cdti or Astra 1.3 cdti but it's a lot bigger than them and still returns really good MPG.

Avensis 2 litre tdi estate. Comfortable, a bit of space for dogs, catch, tools, any firewood I spot laying around and if it's driven smoothly it gets around 5 litres per 100 kilometres (47 to the gallon). Less around town, more like 35 to 40 mpg then.

More comfortable for carrying people than a van too but once I'm on rough roads and tracks I often wish I'd bought a landy. Especially with the way the prices ( of landrovers) are going up.

Volvo (or as the man in our Chinese take out says wowo) v40 s di can't make it go below 50mpg 70 on a run no problem 130 to tax, on my second one as old one had 205 k on clock had 4 years hassle free from it. Hope this one does the same
