walshie 2,804
I wasn't actually weighing up the pros and cons of snaring. I was just saying leaving a live-(ish) animal dangling over a public road means it was sited in a dumb place to begin with. Quote Link to post

Squirrel_Basher 17,100
I profess I know nothing about snares. My son just got in and said he'd seen a fox a few hundred yards up the lane caught in a snare. Fair enough, but the idiot who put it there put it in the hedge between a field and the road. The fox was hanging itself on the lane, in plain view of anyone who was walking or driving by. We went back up there and did what was necessary. I might be naive, but I thought snares weren't supposed to have a stop to stop them tightening all the way. This one didn't but it seemed to have a sort of metal tag on it to stop it opening up again? Or could it have been a snare for a different animal? Anyway, it's on my bonfire now so no passers by will have to see it. Snares don't have a stop to prevent them tightening. The law states a deer stop to prevent the snare fully closing on say a deers leg . Quote Link to post

FENN 24
Snaring fence lines /Hedges is always a tricky business the risk of entanglement increases greatly .That being said there are a few way to try to prevent this occurring.I tend to keep the snare short on such situations so the fox cannot not jump upwards .Glenn put a good idea on here i think its in the pinned posts where there snare is attached to another wire that goes back into the field so when the fox hits the snare hang on i better change the word ! when the fox hits the restraint the fox goes out into the field away from the fence /hedge and is away from the entanglement situation . I much prefer to get them on the open runs using the ghost snare last winter i never had any dead in the snares or any entanglements .This seems to be the best way forward in my view .One thing is for sure we need to preserve our way of pest control and education to people who havent done much in the way of snaring is essential to stop such situations arising . 1 Quote Link to post
