Giro 2,648
What's the best options to deal with rust/damage .. I'd left my air arms in the gun bag laying around (securely).. I've got it out today and to my dismay, it has a inch (ish) blob of rust on the main barrel and the bottle.. I'd rubbed it down with all in 1 oil I never had any wd40 handy . I then lightly tried to take the crust off with sponge scuorer it did and a bit of the bluing. Opinions? ?? Quote Link to post

Giro 2,648
I'm not sure wether to blue it or camo tape over it lol.. Can I blue a small patch or do I have to do the whole barrel? ? Quote Link to post
PeskyWabbits 464
Can I ask, generally, why guns are blued? I mean, it looks great but as a protection it is pants. BSA experimented with enamel but went back to bluing, probably due to public demand. But it isn't much better than bare metal, you still have to oil it and keep it away from water. Quote Link to post
Giro 2,648
I'm not sure mate.. I've abused a few over the years and want to try and keep this one half tidy.. I've seen bluing kits but never done it.. 1 Quote Link to post
pianoman 3,587
Blueing was originally devised to protect metalwork from heat and burnt powder searing from the days of powder and ball shot and the first cartridge weapons. It didn't flake off like paint did and kept the looks of expensive sporting guns longer. Case-hardened steel with enamel finishing was time consuming and expensive to create as a finish overall, but blueing worked as an attractive and cost effective finish To the point where, nowadays, a rich, lustrous blue-black polished surface is the ideal finish that customers love to see on their guns. It's not designed as an anti rust or weatherproof coating. In fact, I once read somewhere, that blueing itself is a form of rust that acts positively with the raw steel of the gun's metals! 1 Quote Link to post
Giro 2,648
If I was not to re blue & went for the camo tape option, would the barrel deterioate under the tape ?? Quote Link to post
moxy 617
If I was not to re blue & went for the camo tape option, would the barrel deterioate under the tape ?? Provided you did a pukka job of putting it on. No creases and no gaps the it should be fine. I would give it a good wipe over with 0000 wire wool and thinners to ensure you have a good clean bonding surface for the tape. In all honesty it will look shite but importantly serve the purpose of protecting your metal work from further abuse! Quote Link to post
mark williams 7,553
No excuses for any of us,- clean your rifle every trip out. 1 Quote Link to post
si brown 8,486
If I was not to re blue & went for the camo tape option, would the barrel deterioate under the tape ?? never used camo tape but i recon it'll prob be pours, so id de-grease it fist and then wrap it in insulating tape, that will keep any damp and air out and then camo it! might be wrong but thats what id do atb si Quote Link to post

Do you reckon I should try and blue it then fella ?? I've not really seen any that are taped.. Anyone with examples ?? Quote Link to post
moxy 617
My rapid is dipped mate. I got it like that and I often wonder if the metalwork is in poor order under it. A reblue would be my choice but send it to someone who knows what they are doing and get the job done right. Quote Link to post

Dont wrap it in any thing at all , think of it this way when you go to buy a rifle and its wrapped in what ever the first thing you think is WHATS IT LIKE UNDER THERE and it may harm the resale value to atvbmac  Quote Link to post
