Bosun11 537
Used to ferret with an old mongrel collie cur and an EBT (though not together!) Both were decent enough markers and the cur could catch bolters with ease. Quote Link to post
Chicken_man 1,651
Used my farm bred collies for yrs. Great ferreting dogs. Marking, holding, occasionally catching. 3 Quote Link to post
dogmad riley 1,344
anyone been out ferreting with dogs that were not lurchers or a terriers.. not looking to reinvent the wheel here be interested hearing about other types tried and just how they got on , good or bad experiences cheers I used to take are lasses great dane when my lurcher went. He was absolutely useless at 1st but then he got the hang of it and now marks holes as good as a hound. Only problem is the rabbits are long gone if they bolt but he has caught a few. I only took him for the company as ferreting without a dog isn't the same 4 Quote Link to post

Tiercel 6,986
My first ferreting dog was the family pet boxer. TC nice one was it quick..seen a few racy ones about .did it ever catch much, how was the marking She was a small boxer, not too sure she was pedigree. One thing was certain if she rose a rabbit it was dead, she could follow a scent that was a couple of hours old so the rabbit either went to ground or she caught it, it was one or the other. Often she would rise a rabbit and run off into the distance chasing it, I would follow and she would come back to me, I would tell her then "where is it" and she would follow the drag right to either the warren or the dead rabbit. That's the good part, bad part was any rabbit she actually caught was inedible as she would crunch every bone in it's body, same with rabbits in the nets if she got there first. Thats not to mention the sheep situation. TC 2 Quote Link to post
reddog70 236
heard quite good things about mongrels and crossbreeds from the past, my mrs uncle grew up in ireland and says he used to just go bushing and ferreting with what ever was about all the latch key dogs from the area would just join him and his mates and go out on mass reckons he always came back with something...i wonder with all this multi crossing of pet dogs that seems to be the new trend maybe things like health and hunting instinct just might improve a bit for the pet dog, their basically just going back to mongrels again.. bobhow 57
back in the day i had a pup from accidental mating between doberman and my mates collie greyhound bitch to look at he resembled a under weight labrador but when he was behind a rabbit it had to go to ground or be caught he had no speed but was relentless he could travel in cover almost as well as out of it down side could be a bit of a bugger with other dogs Edited April 19, 2016 by bobhow 3 Quote Link to post
