Tweaking Traps (Mole Traps)

Its not in my nature, mate,....but some of its 'out there', anyway ?,....(too many on here, & elsewhere' 'falling over themselves', to tell ALL they know ? (cant help themselves) must make them , feel good,....lol)

Sorry, for not being a bit more 'forthcoming', about the details,.......but i mostly had too learn, the hard way ? (from my own , mistakes) lol

Interesting. You make four posts saying basically nothing. So, if you aren't willing to help the guy and you obviously don't need any advice yourself; why bother reading the forum let alone posting?

It depends on what is happening on occasion that has prevented the capture so might not be just the adjustments on the traps but a plethora of events.

 

Are the traps getting touched for a start? If not then you're not setting in the right areas and the traps might be just fine.

What type of soil you are setting is can govern various changes in how the trap is set in the tunnel.

If you're getting filled traps then you need to look at how they are filling them, from the side or going underneath them, again the traps might be fine and it could be how you've set them in the tunnels i.e too firm, daylight leaks etc.

If the trigger plate is being pushed but not set off and then the traps are being filled then yes, some adjustment might be needed but only to put the trap on a hair trigger so it is sprung at the merest of touches.

Finally, and I really hope it's not the case, are the traps being sprung but nothing is in them? This could be that the traps are strong enough to dish out the final act so the mole is able to wriggle free.

 

When you consider just these five basic considerations it leads to loads of variations to consider to improve your catch rates and might not be just adjusting the traps..

Well, your 'powers of observation', are 'impressive' !,....lol,....but, am i bothered ?,.....lol (im pretty sure, if the guys interested enough ?,... then he will learn, cause, theres plenty stuff, you can 'glean' from,... out there) Are you the 'official' 'self-appointed' spokesman, on here now ? ,...or what,....ha ha (bring it on !) ....ive noticed that your a bit 'condescending' at times, ...on here,....but save it for others,...cause i wont be 'having' it , from you ,.....ha ha ha ( & when did i say, i never need advice ??)

Seems strange that someone who claims to know so much and isn't shy about constantly reminding us of that is so reluctant to actually part with anything. Not only that, but makes out that anyone prepared to offer advice is doing it for their own purposes. Well, on here I've been lucky enough to benefit from advice from the likes of J Darcy, Mole Trapper, Uncle Pester and Dirks Donuts amongst others and been grateful for it. Are you saying that they are just in it for the glory?

 

I've also given people help on open forum and by PM and don't feel guilty about it. That is what a forum is all about. Not just a place for some people to talk to themselves and massage their own ego all night.

 

Sorry I can't help with Giro's problems. I'm not afraid to say that I have nothing to add about scissor traps except my belief that there are better types of traps available,

Hey, ..ive got nothing to prove, or justify,...on here,....(not interested),..& dont try & put 'words in my mouth' , either ? ( or try to 'assume' ) & as far as my own 'ego' ,....is concerned ?,....well, i could basically 'guarantee' , that theres other 'mole catchers' on here, who are more 'efficient' at the job !,...than myself (overall),..& i would say. ATB, to them,....it doesnt bother, me ? Also, i thought youd be a 'bit quiet' on this one ? lol,....since the guy, wasnt asking about the 'putanges' ! ha ha (which ive never felt, any need to use ?,....novelty, wore off with me quickly, when i got the 'no mol' sent over, years ago,...from the states) lol lol

Ive not used them yet lol ..

 

Was just initial enquiry should I just set them and see how I go or is there a basic tweak ??

 

Ive had resonable succsess with Sissor Traps and thought I should buy more traps..

 

Rather than limt myself to the sissor traps, I purchased 5 duffes and 5 talpex..

 

Im not mole catching on a big scales and its more favours and for my own entertainment..

Having faffed about with the ones you mention then there are a few tweaks i would recommend before you put them in the Earth's crust.

 

Dufus Types:

 

Before I set the trap I know that the trigger loop will have to travel too far for how I use them so I get a pair of snub nosed pliers with the wire cutting bit in the jaws. I slide the cutting jaw under the trigger pin holding wire and if the cutting edge catches then I simply trim the holding wire length by about half a mil.

Then you want to set that end of the trap. If it holds then quids in, if not then bend the trigger holding wire over a bit. Then you want to flip the trap over holding it set in your hand. Using the pliers grab the sides of the bottom of the loops and bend them towards to the trap. This not only opens the loops up wider but also means the bottom of the loops will sit flush with the bottom of the run.

Still holding the trap set bend the trigger loop towards the catch loop so the mole doesn't have to go so far in to trigger the trap.

Now with that side sorted out you want to do the same to the other side.

With both sides set trigger one side and ensure the non-triggered side remains set - you don't want the vibrations from one side going off to set off a side that hasn't been touched. Then reset that side and set off the other side to ensure that both sides now remain set when the opposite is triggered.

With a bit of bending and cutting here and there you can get the triggers to go off if the air pressure in he tunnels changes from the mole farting if you desire.

I have never needed to adjust these at all. Maybe bend the trigger plate downwards if you want a better trigger but I just adjust how I set the trap rather than the trap itself. When Ou've got the trigger pin through the little hole on the trigger plate, take the pressure off the spring a little by squeezing and then use the surface of your thumb to ensure than the pin doesn't protrude through the trigger plate as this means more travel distance for the trigger plate for the trap to be sprung.

 

Scissor traps.

 

I adjusted mine by putting them in a bin for a week until they disappeared.

 

Adjusting traps isn't rocket science and knowing how isn't going to put anyone out of business unless they don;t know how to do this already. The science part comes in from when you first look at the field or area to be trapped. I must be a wanted man on here now for divulging such info so make sure you put these tips to use and carry on the legacy that is trapping moles.

Most traps will benefit from a little tweaking and adjustment,...we owe it to the target species to give them the best death possible....it's only right...
