david901 165
I have an old Baikal side by side 12 bore and was wondering if it would be OK to use Steel shot in it? Its not proofed for steel but I read that it should be Ok. I am interested in using it for some pigeon shooting, which I can then use for feeding ferrets, hawks etc. Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
Baikal are tuff as old boots, but I can't make a suggestion about steel through them. I believe York guns are/were the UK importers, so perhaps a word with them may help. 1 Quote Link to post

Torquemada 288
You can buy low pressure steel shot carts. Asknyou local dealer. 1 Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
You can use none high performance steel no problem providing your gun is half choke or less, I would check, as Russian Purdy's tend to be tightly choked, keep your range down to a sensible limit, as it does `not have the legs that high performance stuff does. 1 Quote Link to post
david901 165
Thanks guys. I read that you can use non high performance shot without issue. I was just checking...lol I was considering buying a semi-automatic but cash is tight right now so I would prefer to stick with the old side by side for the time being. Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Then when you get fed up with the ordinary stuff, get your semi auto (a Benelli of course) and use the high performance stuff, it really is very good. 1 Quote Link to post
david901 165
You read my mind Charlie Caller. I was thinking of getting a Benelli Semi auto. Trying to decide on which model though. It will be a second hand gun that I get, but if its been cared for it should last me a good few years. 1 Quote Link to post

Yes it can, however due to its hardness, it is much more likely to cause choke bulge or flare, in older tightly choked guns, hence the "recommendation" that in standard guns it only be fired through half choke or less, but its your gun, your money 1 Quote Link to post
