socks 32,253
The ideal whippet for me would be one that's nowhere near me when I'm working my dogs the skin skinned shivery useless fukcing lap dogs ........Trev70 has a really good one - surely that would cut the mustard for any self respecting lurcherman? I wouldn't know mate I have never seen it work ... However I wouldn't run another mans dog down anyway no matter what I thought of it ......... 1 Quote Link to post

Tracy Priestnall 83
I love whippets ..but i wouldn't own one , i had a bitch on slip , ten terriers started yapping under cover 150 yards away and shes starts cart-wheeling , so i un-clipped her her lead and held her under my arms and we got a run...struck me later that i'd just had a longdog capable of rat to roe ( pre fecking ban ) under my arms ! vary handy and vary odd - how many lurchers could you pick up ? and they look so ' innocent ' if you get a pull 1 Quote Link to post
artic 595
How many have seen a Whippet in the flesh work? There's going to be good and bad.. Mine is a fraction under 21tts, this midget has a nose on him like a springer, enters all types of cover put In front of him. No yapping, no shivering and a beautiful retriever to the hand. I will add that no retrieving training was given to him. He's steady, nimble and sharp with a take off that is always a joy to watch. Without a doubt the first 150yrds is owned by a whippet. They can put most dogs to shame when it comes to turning its quarry. Great little dogs that can, and will pack a punch, they will work for you all day in any cover taking minimal injuries always trying to please. 8 Quote Link to post

I have the very same experience with my whippet dog and just to add when brought out ferreting mine and a couple more I've seen, seem to have a sixth sense when working with ferrets or bushing dogs regarding where the next bolter is coming from. Very good noses on them and I think SOMETIMES what people mistake as nervousness is actually a very high sence of awareness. It's like their senses are on high alert most of the time 2 Quote Link to post
brenner 773
In short for a running dog thats so easy to keep and lives off an extra small scoop of nuts more then a terrier they deliver the goods when it comes to rabbits and a pleasure to watch. I owned a collie x years ago. Brutal for the daytime rabbiting due to his stalking rabbits and a very poor ferreting dog because if you brought him to a place where a rabbit bolted and hit the cover before he caught it, he remembered that piece of cover and would spent most his time watching it, Im talking about even a week after it happened. He didn't have the same take of or turn of foot as my whippet so missed alot of bolting rabbits on tight ground. I would never have another but that's just down to my personal experience. Point I'm trying to make is.. We can all see or own a bad one of any breed and then write them off in our heads when truth be told there are alot of very good collie x dogs out there. I will try find pic Quote Link to post
