Last time i had a boat was around 5 years back,a nice RIB with 2X175's on the back,flyer,it was in the med near Javea,used to use the launch at moraira.The med as i found out that summer is absolutely crap for bottom fishing BUT we were out once or twice early season around 25 miles offshore when we were surrounded by tuna showing on the surface,we had some expensive lures,couple of them cost 25 quid in the tackle shop in moraira,henis geared up for tuna fishermen,anyway long story short we trolled for several days,tried dead baiting with mackerel,and didnt even get a sniff of a bite,as the old saying goes if it floats flies or fucks its better to rent than to buy,wouldnt mind another boat though.

first proper boat a treeve 17 built like a tank and a massive beam very seaworthy i put a fiberglass cuddy on later i will try and find some pics ,a cracking inshore trolling boat not the best of pics

 

 

grass is always greener so i built /fitted out a fast offshore tremlett 21 hull from this bare hull

Did you make all the mounds and do the top sides yourself on the tremlett? I built a few boats now, ranging from 14 foot up to 30ft, I quite enjoy glass work.

it was literally a bare hull with 2 stringers in it when i got it "it was a guy that used to work at tremletts that laid the hull for his own use " the arch was a tremlett build but all the rest i did myself and had some guidance off a friend who did high end car bodywork ,all the teak trim was split down recycled park benches ,2 birth and chemical loo in the front a pop up galley in the cabin ,it was very economical on power "due to it being an offshore class 2 hull it did 35kn+ with the 115 and cruised at 30kn at 3/4 throttle

i built it originally to get to the wrecks as we were held back a lot by the tides every other week where it was moored ,it let us steam an hour out do a couple of hours drifting and steam back just in time to get in

Sounds good, I am very limited by tide where I am moored, so it's either a 10-12 hr trip, or a 3-4hr trip, I usually opt for the longer one !

I had to do all new ribs and stringers in the Wilson, I replaced the deck as it felt soft in the odd place, had been standing for a few years full of water, so all the foam ribs were sodden

any softness and if you can your best ripping it out and re doing it was something my mate got me to appreciate ! at the end of the day its usually easier and theres no nagging doubts if you get caught in some "wobbly water " 20+miles out ! it was quite satisfying though got to admit

glad you opened another thread on boats instead of hijacking poor old single barrels post, sorry about that sb,

 

my boating started off with a small 10 ft fibreglass dingy with a small seagull engine for inshore fishing, we had some fun in this boat, i eventually sold it to get a bigger boat, so my mate and i went halves and bought his dads boat, a shetland 17 ft with conversions to suit the sea better, my god, was it a heavy boat on land but super stable on the water, we had some good fish on that boat, very memorable,

we sold that after a long while as our paths changed, when it was a good time to go fishing one of us couldn't make it, so the best thing was to sell it,

i ended up buying my own boat which i mentioned on sb's post, a sea hog samurai, 16 ft i think, with a f/stroke 50 hp suzuki engine, it was a nice boat, it had the two swivel seats at the steering end, and two molded seat in each corner on the back end, four of you could fish comfortably, my mate and i went out one lovely calm summers day, we started mackereling as bait and i hooked a big sand eel, so i live baited it uptide on my other rod, and set the reel, then carried on mackereling on the other, then the reel on the uptider started to run, with that i took hold of it and waited for it to stop, to take the bait, as it did, now waiting for it to take off again, as it did, then i struck it, the rod nicely bent over and my mates getting excited, after a nice fight my mate netted a nice 30 +lb tope, we were both grinning from ear to ear, in the excitement i unhooked it and watched it swim away, we also had some smoothhounds to 10lb,

after having that boat for quite a while i sold it as i could only keep it on a farm at that time, and the farm was to far each time i wanted to use it, making my trip a two day all-deal,

so that's why i bought myself a sea hog sea jeep, 15ft, it fitted nicely in my double garage, and i could launch/retrieve it myself, not having to rely on anyone else, plus any work could be done easily at home, it was a lovely boat stable on the water, planed nicely,and easy to manage, nice space for two-three but no more, it had a f/stroke 50hp honda outboard, which if i remember right would do around 30knts, which was plenty fast enough, as its not always comfortable out there, i had that for a long while but ended up selling it, a while later i ended up moving over the pond to canada, which is boat city, here you can put your boats in anywhere on lakes, nice boat ramps on most lakes, you do a boat test to use them here and you get a registration paper for your boat, like a log book, incase it gets stolen,

seagull's cant beat them ,i think they were designed for the army could be fixed with a lump hammer and a screw driver and run on anything below sae 90 lol BUT they always got you out of trouble ,thats if you could stand the stench from the exhaust ,many fond memories ,the seahog boats were very stable and popular i always fancied one myself if i remember thay used to be available as a package from somewhere up lancashire way with ex rnli recon engines ,yes 30kn is fast on water aint it hard at that speed for someithing so soft that you can swim in thats one of the reasons i had to give boats up ,the joints wouldnt take it !

it is hard work and time consuming if you need to travel far ,i was very fortunate i was only just over a mile from the boat yard and mooring at the time

funnily enough on one of my boats, the spare engine was a seagull, it use to sit up the front in the cabin, i didn't run it up from trip to trip for months, but when i thought it was time to run it, it started up just like that.........amazing good engines they were, i know what you mean about the fumes tho..... but the reliability made up for it

yes mate, i opted to what i think is a better life, you never know, you might want to come over here one day for a bit of fishing, and if im in the postion to offer you a trip out on the water, i will do,
