Truther 1,579
If your dogs pile into everything, hows that distinguishing between prey species? How do you know your dogs aren't enjoying smashing a rabbit more than a fox? You seem to be saying dogs that don't pile in aren't trying hard enough, or (can't believe i'm writing this) smashing a rabbit is somehow a sign of gameness? In the past iv'e stopped hunting with people with unruly dogs, dogs that one way or another spoil the day/night. Not such a problem when we dug/bolted/bushed foxes back in the day, we expected them to pile in, who wouldn't? For the life of me i can't see why you'd want dogs that treat rabbits the same way? It don't really say anything about a dog. If you think dogs that don't pile in aren't trying hard enough, maybe a walk out is a good idea, mine try 100% from start to finish, working things does it for the bitch, spaniels aren't bred to pile in are they, she takes small game given a chance, but no interest in smashing in when another dog catches, and gives her catches up to the lurcher when she catches, a lot less hassle than possessive dogs ruining everything you catch imo. Gaz_1989 9,539
I think there's a big difference between bushers piling into a rabbit and the lurchers joining in on a tug of war. I would expect a bushing pack of terriers to pile in, my terrier piles in if the lurchers make a catch near the cover but she will get off when told. My lurchers won't pile into the terriers catch, they know the score, they won't take rabbits off each other either as a rule. Different lads working different ways from what I can gather. 1 Quote Link to post
matt1979 766
Always amazes me how people question other people's ways of doing things without seeing in the flesh. Just because a terrier or any other dog doesn't pile in doesn't mean anything in relation to effort. We regularly hunt with 6 or 7, yes occasionally they have a tussle but few and far between, we have one terrier that has no interest in anything that any other dog catches, but different dog if she gets there first and 8 or 9 times out of 10 she is first there in cover. Do I question her commitment because she does rag anything or pile in? Not chance she just knows it's job done and is on her bike for others I am more than happy with that attitude but wouldn't criticise others for having a different style atb 1 Quote Link to post

Guest foxpack
When all our full pack is out they have a very good catch rate .if we are bunny bashing.there is a kill a squel then 1 of the beagle x cockers will fetch it out of cover .most of them will carry on hunting not taking any real notice of the kill.if the little bow legged twat of a Russell is there .you've to go in cover and find the little shit grumping and growling away to himself.if they have a worry of a dead Fox .the terrier will be more keen to stop thew most of day if you let them while the beagle x cockers will won't to move on to next pieces of cover to hunt. 1 Quote Link to post

Tracy Priestnall 83
no two bobbery packs are the same , and there are NO rules in bobbery packs ..two of the greatest things about bushing and anyone trying to set standards is in the wrong game. i don't do enough rabbiting to care about retrieving and anything bigger doesn't need retrieving . if mine saw a ferret they'd think ' yellow mink! i like well run , organised packs and i like' wild as hawk's ' packs.. no snoberry bobberry...kev , medlock crew Quote Link to post
