Truther 1,579
Its a brilliant catch mate, the dogs look spot on, but after that the vid makes me cringe, the dog turns towards you with the rabbit, wagging his tail, you're on top of him a bit quick, then you get a good grip on his collar, and the dog gets a better grip on his rabbit, you even look a bit nervous about getting bit when the terrier comes in? Not a dig mate, iv'e gone and spoilt my lurchers close catch retrieves myself, he brings them 100 yds, but he wont bring them from 10/20. Just an opinion, but you're making the dog possessive by getting in there to quick, any walking towards the dog is negative re enforcement imo. 2 Quote Link to post
bunnyboiler 1,053
If I don't get in there quick a tug of war will happen which is the last thing I want the other lurcher backs of but the terrier gets a bit frisky which is why I try to take it of her not the other dog The last thing I want is a pack of dogs running half a marathon with a bunny ? Truther 1,579
That's one of the reasons i wont use terriers for bushing these days mate, most want to pile in on the catch, been there done that. Don't have that problem these days with my spaniel x, she just don't pile in, if she catches something the lurcher mugs her, which means she never gets to retrieve, or rarely, so still not ideal, but better than a tug of war. Hard problem to solve ain't it, maybe a good topic for a thread, see how other lads go about things? 1 Quote Link to post
Guest foxpack
If my little dog Brian catches in cover .he will hold it till my crazy arse lurcher smashes her way in to snatch it off him.haa 1 Quote Link to post

He got in the habit of just staying where he caught it,now if there's another dog he'll either do that or run off if it comes near him,or if there's no other dog it's 50/50 whether he'll retrieve it or I'll have to go to him. I expect the bushers and the lurchers to "pile in",the ones that don,t id not feed for long.Id not stop a bushing pack from wrecking their quarry,it would be like offering them water with a lid on the bowl.Anything they chase and wreck is par for the cause, especially pest species, anything i salvage in time goes in the pot or freezer. When a team become accustomed to the other members its common for the pack to relinquish certain quarry to a dominant lurcher,or else, the team become accustomed to such and react accordingly at the catch, other times and other catches they "pile in" ,anything reluctant is a wastrel. 2 Quote Link to post

Truther 1,579
I spend more time holding my dogs back than out and out hard bushing Morton, way different dogs/style of hunting, be hard to make any kind of comparison tbh. I hunt rabbits, if the dogs piled in and smashed every one what use is that? They caught two today, one each, bitch caught first one, lurcher brings it back, no squabbles, bitch puts another out and the lurcher gets it, she comes back to me, he brings the rabbit, no grief. Hows that not better than a tug of war? I'll tell you something i know about proper dogs, real class dogs, they distinguish between prey species. Some dogs smash anything and everything, usually pretty game dogs to a point, the really good ones lose interest in rabbits, rabbits just don't do it for them mentally, seen it in lurchers and terriers. I'd rather have a dog that needed that kind of stimulation and was a bit indifferent to rabbits. Dogs smashing everything means they're not giving it any real thought, anything even a rabbit must do it for them mentally? In simple terms i don't think smashing everything means a lot about a dogs real inner thoughts, if it has any? Iv'e had a fair few dogs with bedlington in them, still have, even the whipp x is an 1/8, i'm not anti beddy, i think you get more out of it with lurchers than terriers though. Quote Link to post

I don,t hold my mutts back, ever,i totally agree that the bushing pack members often distinguish betwixt prey species and hunt and react accordingly, then still smash in.id not feed anything that did not hunt according to its prey etc.etc.etc..I own bushers to suit lurchers,i own lurchers that are suited to the vested interest of the bushers.I don,t see the point in owning a bushing jukel without a gun or a lurcher on point,i don,t see the point in owning a lurcher that fails to adapt to the service of a bushing terrier. My mutts smash all and sundry,be that a scraggy conie,a pest species or anything inbetwixt,i expect them to treat a rat with the same hunting contempt as something far fleeter or bigger, fact.id be fecking insulted if they started to choose any prey with a more comfortable outlook,id cull the mutt that picked its quarry to suit its day.Bushers bush, whats in the bush should never ever come into the equation, when it does its a time to re-evaluate the kennel,i don,t need to,again fact.
