Graham M 36
I understand fully what you say. I went down to Bisley some 30 years ago to buy a Match air pistol that was being advertised. I drove down early so that I could have a natter with some of the lads that had gone down for Bisley Week. Went into the NSRA shop and duly asked to have a look at the pistol. I was handed it and like most people raised the gun and pointed it at the wall at the back of the sales counter, making sure no-one was in my line of sight. In an instant the twonk behind the counter grabbed my wrist and twisted the pistol out of my hand moaning about "Pointing guns" and "Safety procedures". Jeeze I have been frikkin shooting since 1968 and this eejit was telling me that eyeing up a pistol at a blank wall was unsafe. Needles to say I told him to stick it up his arse and left. Never went back to Bisley again, which was a shame because I always wanted to do Bisley week but that prat put me off the place. G Quote Link to post
David Aiken 253
One I went to they were real arse holes. I agree with being safe as a top priority, although I was a guest of a friend. Walked in, they had a club rifle laid out on the range facing down range BOLT OUT. I asked the friend is it was safe to have a look. He said yes and I was duly bollocked by this range master as he didn't say it was safe himself. Now I know I'm no expert but pointing an unloaded rifle, without a bolt in down a range on which it is laid out for members use isn't the end of the world. Had it not been the done thing at the club I would have happily accepted being told so in a respectful manner, rather than scolded like some naughty child and shouted at. I never went back and much prefer going out with lads who do vermin control and game shooting / deer stalking. I also found many members are the club to be what some describe as "gun nuts" , "fanatics" "fantasists" and "Walter Mitty" . However I also shot one for a local air rifle gun club, shooting .177 rifle in building at a steel bell. It was a fantastic time I had and every club member was helpful, nice to be around and generally great people. Therefore we can see they are not all the same. Maybe his attitude was wrong, but yes this was correct. At my gun club if you take the bolt out and the magazine plus put in a flag, you do not leave the range, move your gun or allow anyone to touch it unless you are told to do so by the range officer. And I would be accepting of that David, however, they did not have that rule. If he had had a word with me I would have duly apologised etc Instead he shouted at me, then said that I was perfectly fine to look at / use that rifle, exactly as it was, simply because he had said so. All just seemed a bit odd to me and the only purpose was to promote the self importance of this idiot. The two lads I started off shooting with also drilled gun safety into me, however, they were helpful, polite and not up their own arses. As said though they obviously are not all like this at all! Altho it certainly can put people off if their first experience is like this. Quote Link to post
