Ferreting in Somerset...........

Went out for a ferreting foray with my brother-in-law and his son(neither of which had ever been before). We went to a local piece of permission that I have, where all the buries are in hawthorn/blackthorn hedges. So with seccatuers handed out and instructions as to how to place the nets etc. we started with a small bury of 6 holes.I was very impressed how well they both adapted to the new sport, and, the first rabbit was in the net after a short 4-5 min wait. After the initial good start,we had a much longer wait,as the bury was a lot deeper than I thought,so,I popped another ferret in,and, that soon moved things on,and another two rabbits hit the nets.the ferrets were showing a lot around the holes so we picked up and went on to the next small bury. One more rabbit in the bag,and one that slipped the net and ran to the safety in the roots of a huge oak tree.we done another three buries, one of which was a blank. While we were doing a quite large bury we had had 5 rabbits from there, when my nephew said that he could see something down one of the holes.I said can you reach it,and,he said,I'll try,and then he pulled out another rabbit that had pushed itself into a blockend.......he was over the moon, and,we all had a good laugh. The day at an end,and 12 rabbits on the grass, and,we were all happy with how it panned out.It does take a good while netting these buries because of the thorns, and,we obviously can't cut away too much of the hedge, but, they are always worth the extra effort.....................KEEP AT 'EM!.......................martin.
