walshie 2,804
Can't put this question in the 4x4 section as it;'s a crappy old Vauxhall Combo van I'm talking about. Our dog van failed it's MOT the other day for "Steering wheel excessive movement up and down." I took it home and the steering wheel adjustment was a bit loose, so tightened it up and it sorted the up and down movement out. I took it back for its retest and the first thing he did was grab the steering wheel and pull it. He meant "in and out" not "up and down". I'd never noticed it and I'm damned if I know what is causing it. You can pull the steering wheel out about 1/2" and push it back again. I took the airbag off hoping it was the nut holding the wheel on that was loose, but it's not. The actual splined steering column moves up and down with the wheel, like it's pulling out of a joint or something. I checked the UJ under the pedals and everything seems tight. Any ideas? David Aiken 253
Its sound like the crumple zone built into the steering column is either totally shot, or the rubber has perished. I had the same trouble on a 1974 Vauxhall 2.3 Magnum Coupe` Unless the column has worn where it joins the steering rack?
Gaz_1989 9,539
Sounds like you need to find a new MOT tester ?

Either this has just started or the other guy didn't think to test if the steering wheel pulled in and out. I went to this new one as he's near and he just passed my motorbike a couple of hours before. PeskyWabbits 464
Looks like a common issue. It is mentioned in a few forums but only the link below gives a proper procedure http://www.roadtestreports.co.uk/qanda/64652/

All the answers are different and the problem with this one is there is no little black cap to prize open. Thought it was too good to be true when I saw it. Hopefully the garage will sort it easily enough (and cheaply).
