I did something similar once.....stone cold sober, road rage, someone elses not mine, put my everything into 2/3 shots, all clean as a whistle and the fella was stood there smiling at me! I have never felt so much in trouble! I was in a right mess, he gave me a good going over. I ended up being the only one walking away but I had to go dirty to do it. Not proud.

I think what made street hardened fighters/ boxers of old was poverty. People are over parented and over protected now. The city slums in the UK,Mexico and the US  bred some mean feckers. I could add a few to your list above. Terry Downes,Brian London, Conteh, Minter,Jim Watt Ken Buchan. Men you dont mess with.

With the odd exception, most boxers of yesteryear were born into poverty.

I remember Irish welterweight, Eamon McGee saying he could have two fights just going to and from the shop for his mother. That's the way it was. In poor areas, violence in the family, in the street, at school or at the hands of the police was standard not so long ago.

It's such a hard sport that nothing annoys me so much as a bent decision.

Theres fighters and then theres " natural " fighters....Lee was a natural fighter in every sense of the word.....not a particularly pleasant character but since when did fighters have to be.

Fair points i suppose it makes sense.....though id take Minter off that list straight away he had a privileged little upbringing in Kent god knows why folk always booked him as a rough little Eastender off the estates

Love him or hate him you listen to him....great character the boxing world could use more of.

Ddint even see the fight they were talking about but how can you have a 9 round margin in a split decision ffs !

Strange that you should mention 'natural fighters', many years ago I knew a feared street fighter,  I say a feared fighter but in a neutral environment he was one the nicest, calmest men I have ever met.  He had a natural boxers movement in his upper body, an ability to feint and awareness of personal space.  I followed him into a nightclub one evening, laughing a joking and on the other side of the door two bouncers were waiting for him.....they didn't have a chance, I was absolutely mesmerised by his movements....happy days..
