tomburras 2,730
looking good! cant see on pics properly close up (only got mobile phone for internet and no computer so pics are not great) but iv had it where dye didn't take to bits of my stock round the grip on mine where there was still some tough varnish or oil. a sopping wet tea towel and a hot steam iron with plenty of steam and about 10 mins got mine clear. If you do that tho and use a good tea towel bin it afterwards and don't let your wife find out or theres trouble dunno if it will work for you but it did on mine but im an amateur and made it up as i went along! nice grain on there for an smk! 1 Quote Link to post

pianoman 3,587
I had a feeling you'd be unhappy with the dye route. That dye colour looks rather nice. I like that colour. But I can see where it has set-in unevenly. Some areas are matt and others gloss. I can see why you want to scrap dying the wood Jim. I'm fine with whatever you decide mate. Some dyes to be honest are a bit hit or miss on rifle stocks. Some raise the grain fibres of the wood and give it a wet, gritty feel, some like this don't give an even finish. If possible. I'd like you to bring out the grain figures and give it a nice oil walnut stained finish. A nice, clean finish with an atractive tone and a smooth feel in the hands. That'll be lovely! 1 Quote Link to post
