What with Simon (pianoman) wanting his stock refurb,d and me wanting to try the dye process

 

iv dug this old smk out and im going to do this one to see what it turns out like

 

if im not happy with the results ill stain Simon,s

 

just want to try some thing different first

 

i started this old rifle last year then put it away but now im going to finnish it

 

i stripped all the rust off her before i put it away

 

and to be honest just forgot about it

Nice one mate. I've packed my HW80 stock for the post to you this afternoon. I can't express my gratitude enough, this is so kind of you. I'm looking forward to seeing how you progress with this.

 

I know I'm unkind to these Chinese SMK rifles but, I'm absolutely spoilt by what I get from my Weihrach springers. Are these any good?

 

I sometimes wish we had the same sort of gun laws as they have in the US for owning former WW2 rifles. like these. You can buy a good condition Mosin Nagant 7.62mm rifle and PU scope for a couple of hundred dollars and no license in some places.

I will be interested to see the outcome of your work Mac. So angry, I gave away 2 BSA Meteors and a ASI Sniper that I was given years ago and been left in the loft for many years, they would have been a good project. You got me thinking here Mac....................I want an old springer to work on.

Right , i nitro mos,d the stock and used a blunt scraper and a blunt old knife to remove the old stain and lacquer

 

i use blunt scraper and blunt knife so it dose not dig in and take chunks out of the stock as would a sharp scraper or knife would its so easy to do this with a sharp instrument so blunt ones i find are best for this prose's.

 

Then i washed it down with soapy warm water then it was into a bath with just water no soap suds this is to remove all the soap suds and any nitro mors that is left on the stock

 

next will be a sand down then the wet and dry 800 will be used to smooth her out and then wire wool 00000 grade just to

 

smooth her out a little bit more .

 

Before i dye her there is a lot of grain in this stock that could not be seen before so im going to try and keep it on show

Refinishing a stock is like a roller coaster full of nerves, and excitement!

 

How your doing it is how I done the few iv done. Nitramose the stock then scrub it with soapy water. Then iron any dents out with a steam iron and wet towel, and then raise the grain several times sanding it to be as smooth as glass. massaging tru-oil in after a good staining. I put disposable gloves on and massage oil into the stock until its dry, over and over again (every 24 hours) until the pores are filled in and its like glass, the AYA took about 20 days!

 

Not that im any good at refinishing! or that you need advice! - im just telling you how I did mine.

Naa there crap but i would say ok for plinking in the garden Simon if i was 8 or 9yrs old lol

 

But i think its these old smk,s that have got most of us into the sport in the first place just like the old gat pistols

and the like, just go back to when we were kids getting up on a xmas morning and opening the long box wrapped in xmas paper to reveal the smk rifle that sits in the box in front of you .

 

your not bother,d that its a smk your not bother,d that it looks cheep and nasty to you its the best thing since sliced bread , you run out side to the garden closely followed by your dad set a target up out of the free packet of targets

 

fit your pencil scope on and shoot away till your hearts content .

 

now the thing is when you step back and look at your dad when he has a go he is standing there with the rifle placed upon his shoulder and the biggest smile he can muster on his face is it so bad that its a cheep and nasty gun or is it the start of a BIG ADVENTURE that will last a life time

 

Not all of our parents could afford a cracking top of the range gun and still a good few cant even know

 

But as a child just starting off in this sport its the best top of the range rifle to him or her

 

at the end of the day when your a kid what do they know about hw,s bsa, AA and so on

 

Its an air rifle and it theres yeeeeeeeee haaaaaaaaaaaaa

 

apart from that Simon they make a fecking good Bat or door stop lol

How do you find the nitro mors gets on with the chequering, how do you clear that?

 

Does it just lift or do you need to brush/whatever?

It lifts it Decker then just use a hard tooth brush to get in side the stippling

 

you may have to repeat the prose's two or three times to get it all out

Thanks for the comments Tom iv just got back in from shooting with little hunter got a few crows

 

but nothing else lol.

 

iv just put the first coat of dye on the stock but a light coat just to high light the parts of the stock that still needs smoothing off and it works a treat the dark parts are the places that need more work on so they will be sorted tomorrow night when im finished work .

 

It takes time to get them right lol

This is the first one iv dyed Jonnie

 

still not happy with it at the moment but still a lot of work to do to it yet

 

iv got to wire wool it back again yet then sand the parts that have gone black but they may lighten up once its dry,d

 

but im going to smooth them parts out any way ,

 

the hw100 took just over two weeks to get right
