terryd 8,528
Got the week off and typically too wet for the allotment at the moment so just trying to do few other bits. Love eating pigeon so thought we would check out a couple of fields. Only took 3 decoys save lugging gear and one landed in the tree above me. Took him out and he ht the floor with a thud. The dog was raring to go because when he was confined to his lead with his injury I took him out with the gun and shot a rabbit just to keep him sane so he could get some warm fur in his chops. Every since when he hears the bang he thinks great rabbit though after this mornings shooting he now knows after a bang 9 out 10 time there aint much happening . In an ideal world he would be retrieving pigeons back in the hide but couple slight issues there. 1 he don't retrieve and 2 his terrified of feathers keep it away from me !! it saved me getting him used to chickens and stuff any way he won't go with a mile of chicken. Odd really such a bold hunter who will have a go at most things. The retrieving will come he is excepting the dummy a little better now and the pigeons it will just be familiarity. All good fun and experience and gets him out and about Will nip back later with all the gear for round 2 As you can see I am not a numbers man but just enjoy the dogs company and being out 2 Quote Link to post
king 11,980
Good luck for later terry.if he's starting retrieving the dummy could you start attaching a single feather to it to start.then add another etc as time goes on . Quote Link to post

As you say down the road add fur then maybe slip in a feather. Be interested to see how he reacts to a runner if it turns around it could probably chase him at the moment 1 Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Nice one Terry. How bad is his retrieving? Hit and miss or non existent? Does he stop a few feet away or not come near? Quote Link to post
terryd 8,528
non existent the main reason being his all ways been possessive over stuff so taken nearly two years to get over that it will come in the end. Having success with the dummy he knows what fetch means and over time I can layer stuff onto that. I could have just given up I am not really bothered but I do enjoy doing things with him so just some thing I am doing Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Fair play mate. Keep at him. Was out with my youngster last night. First rabbit she caught she just stood over (after destroying it, lol), second one she ran back to me with and put it in my hand alive, then refused to let go. Then the next 4 were hit and miss. Alternating retrieving and not. Lol. Retrieving right in has never bothered me enough to worry about it. As long as they aren't doing laps of the field or running off then it will do for me. I would rather a dog rough around the edges what fills the bag than that perfectly behaved, obedient, steady dog which doesn't put as much away. Maybe one day I will get the full package. Lol. That dog always brings a smile to my face. 3 Quote Link to post
