Mackerel In Ni

Very interesting neil, thanks for that never heard of a porbeagle before, can you still them?

According to fishing reports the last couple of years they seem to be making a recovery and there's always a couple of massive Six Gilled sharks caught of Ireland every year too.

Thanks neil

Agreed, fresh mackerel is up there with the finest. Kills me when I see lads only catching them for bait.

Can't beat freelined live mackerel for Tope   Only had one onshore, better than the boat. Fishing out of aberdovey, you ever try for Tope Neil .

yes Francie and love eating them nothing finer than just caught mackerel, I love them done in the wok with sugar, soy and onions, they work well with oriental flavours too, Hot smoked mackerel sal

Haven't heard of any local yet.

Treehands, you would really want to know what your at pulling one of them babies onto a kayak.

Where I fish for mackerel I've often asked has anyone caught Tope from the shore but the answer is no, but, they catch Tope up to 50 lbs from boats only a couple of hundred yards from the rocks so of course they could be caught from the shore.

There was a man in Clare in the 40s (I think) who pioneered shark fishing in Ireland and was catching large Porbeagles from the shore back then.

The Porbeagles were fished to near extinction ,but, as far as I know they're making a comeback.

I must see can I find that video.

theres excellent tope fishing in strangford lough and up the coast huge skate just off ballycastle

A friend in Antrim was talked into going out last year for the first time and you should see the Tope he caught. Beginners luck.

They say the Tope follow the Mackerel so when the Mack's are in the Tope aren't far behind, unless you go South or West where it's the Blue Shark.

I have absolutely no interest in deep sea fishing because IMO the skipper and his gadgets find the fish (and IMO half the skill in fishing is finding the fish in the first place) for you but I would love to give the sharks a go.

my interest in sea fishing is for food only, for sport it's the salmonoid species

I should be talking to a few trawler men tomorrow and I'll ask them but I think I already know the answer. In this part of the world the Mackerel seem to get later every year, that's if they arrive at all.

I haven't had my breakfast yet and a fresh Mackerel straight onto the pan would be nice. I wish, LOL.

Aye feather an spinner. Gives you the chance of catching sea trout too. When your getting mackerel wait till one takes then let your line go slack so the fish swims back into the shoal again, then you fill the feathers up with fish before you reel them in.
