Mackerel In Ni

Would they be in Donegal before that Neil?

Possibly. They usually move up the coast but where I fish for them on the Louth coast there's a lot of seals and the boats are often catching them a month before the anglers are.

A couple of friends always tell me that from the trawlers a mile out they just see a line of seals keeping everything away.

Thanks for that Neil, do you use spinner or worm, or both?

For mackerel I always use feathers and instead of a weight at the bottom I use a heavy Koster or German Spratt as you might pick up another mackerel or even a bass.

When I hear that the trawlers have had a few mackerel a mile or two out I try and get down soon after on an early high tide and try and get as many as possible because when the mackerel are in proper then the crowds appear and you'll have no peace.

Where I fish for mackerel they tend to be small to medium size, yet, a couple of miles South I fish an estuary for bass and the odd mackerel I catch there tend to be big.

Last year of the Louth coast the mackerel never really showed and the year before it was nearly September and by then the rods are put away.

right Neil il bring you to a cracking mackerel spot and you can bring me to a bass day out???

Agreed, fresh mackerel is up there with the finest. Kills me when I see lads only catching them for bait.

Can't beat freelined live mackerel for Tope   Only had one onshore, better than the boat. Fishing out of aberdovey, you ever try for Tope Neil .

yes Francie and love eating them nothing finer than just caught mackerel, I love them done in the wok with sugar, soy and onions, they work well with oriental flavours too, Hot smoked mackerel sal

LOL, we'll go your spot first because 9 times outta 10 I don't get a bass, LOL.

It's actually the mouth of the Boyne where I fish for Bass. It's also good for Sea Trout and now and again the middle of the river erupts with shoals of Mackerel going up and down the estuary. The 1 or 2 Seals around usually let you know when the Mackerel are around.

There's a gentleman also fishes there for Bass and he only uses the fly. It's an education watching him. He can spot Bass in the surf or under the surface and cast directly at the particular fish and he often gets it too.

Haven't heard of any local yet.

Treehands, you would really want to know what your at pulling one of them babies onto a kayak.

Where I fish for mackerel I've often asked has anyone caught Tope from the shore but the answer is no, but, they catch Tope up to 50 lbs from boats only a couple of hundred yards from the rocks so of course they could be caught from the shore.

There was a man in Clare in the 40s (I think) who pioneered shark fishing in Ireland and was catching large Porbeagles from the shore back then.

The Porbeagles were fished to near extinction ,but, as far as I know they're making a comeback.

I must see can I find that video.

Very interesting neil, thanks for that never heard of a porbeagle before, can you still them?

According to fishing reports the last couple of years they seem to be making a recovery and there's always a couple of massive Six Gilled sharks caught of Ireland every year too.

A friend in Antrim was talked into going out last year for the first time and you should see the Tope he caught. Beginners luck.

They say the Tope follow the Mackerel so when the Mack's are in the Tope aren't far behind, unless you go South or West where it's the Blue Shark.

I have absolutely no interest in deep sea fishing because IMO the skipper and his gadgets find the fish (and IMO half the skill in fishing is finding the fish in the first place) for you but I would love to give the sharks a go.
