bantam must be after banty roosters :icon_redface:

Or are banty cocks named after the boxing weight class? :hmm:

Interesting topic, never really put much thought into the weight class names before. Hopefully someone like Gnasher will be along with an answer.

I've been led to believe that cruiserweight originates from a naval term. Cruisers are the second largest fighting ship, so cruiserweight are the second biggest fighters.......

what does 12 10lb-13st fight at then.? light heavy ?

Back in the 1700's-early 1800's there was only one Champion...the English Champion...title usually held by the biggest blokes....Heavyweights... other weight classes came along later...an early one was Welter...this is a term taken from horse racing as I understand it...Bantam...I don't know....comparing the smaller men to the smaller game cocks maybe??...Straw weight is the term the WBC used but known as mini-fly weight by the IBF think this was established as late as 1987...others where established later too...super middleweight in 1984 and cruiserweight in 1979...like Angelo Dundee used to say...im still not sure what a Cruiserweight is!
