When your stood down in keswick latrigg looks as if its big but once you get up skiddaw it does look slightly pathetic in comparison. I try to avoid latrigg theres been a couple of occasions when i have witnessed the plauges of chinese fleeing as i come over a hill with a dozen dogs or so. I dont understand why there so scared of dogs lol. 5 Quote Link to post

dytkos 17,802
Defo mate,i turned back tother week as i felt it unsafe more so being on my own,i aint got crampons or an ice axe but some places you need them for your own safety, some people are very reckless, wellies & a fkn cagoule aint exactly whats required up one of Englands highest peaks ffsMy Godfather, a keen and experienced walker who took me Youth Hostelling many times as an adolescent, collapsed and died of a heart attack on Hellvellyn in 1994. R.I.P Uncle (proffessor) Brian HartleyCheers, D. Bloody hell, thats so sad is that D,sounded like a fella who you had a great bond & lots of respect for..R.I.P Brian He was Andy, only one of our family who "made it" was a proffessor at Warwick University, went touring America - in 1969! No one else had been to Spain then, never mind America lol Walked the Dales and the Peaks and the Lakes with him, happy memories. Cheers, D. 2 Quote Link to post
mushroom 13,091
Helvyllyn is a beautiful yet dangerous place. Seen plenty up there in the depths of winter walking over the snow with nothing under it. I've turned back here in the Pyrenees due to bad conditions and not having the right gear with me. Sometimes it's just best to say mother nature won this time 2 Quote Link to post

FUJI 17,327
Living here in Cumbria Hellvellyn is forever on the local news,9 times out of 10 it's to announce the death or rescue of a walker on there,I've never climbed it,i don't like heights lol so when i do i will definitely NOT be climbing it via Striding Edge..like Mush said Hellvellyn can be a dangerous place as can almost any mountain,i regularly see the Air Ambulance out on the Fells or cross paths with the Mountain Rescue teams, yes they are amazing places but never take them for granted & again likes been said don't ever be afraid to turn back if the weather, illness or something else strikes,it really isn't worth it..there will be other days ? 2 Quote Link to post
mackay 3,384
Just reading this morning about a 28 year old woman having to be rescued off Ben Nevis, she was wearing shorts and trainers, she was on a mountain biking holiday and apparently just decided to pop up the mountain. No long term ill effects although it would seem she has suffered slight oxygen starvation as she keeps rattling on about a hobbit like figure with a Pomeranian appearing out the mist mumbling minshaw over and over again.
