Strange Day On The Trout Yesterday

Recommended Posts

Tried a new fishery yesterday as I've decided to not go to my regular anymore as after going there for 6 years the same fella who's serves me every time, spoke to me like I'd never caught a fish in my life telling me how to handle them, not to steal any more than my limit aswell as a load of other stuff. Done my head in. Found a nice fishery with a very good head of large Browns so headed there in hope of one. Not much cover around the lakes and they where situated in middle of arable fields so it was VERY windy, the first few hours where slow. Moved to a different lake and started getting bite after bite on green and white fritz but you'd strike and they'd be on for a second then they'd come off. This happened about 6 times before I chopped half its tail off which led to 3 fish in 3 successive casts before the same problem started all over again, hooks where sharpened throughout day but just couldn't connect, 4/5 other anglers had the exact same problem. Any ideas apart from poor fishing?

Sounds like you answered your own question.

The fish were not really taking but half heartily attacking your lure. Cutting the tail short brought their mouth closer to the hook.

Now give yourself 20 lashed of a whip for fishing for Brown Trout using a lure  .

Firing squad ,LOL.

Crucifixion's too good for 'em sir!!

Brown trout are renowned for taking dry flies, any purist will tell you that!!

Perhaps it was what the fly was representing to the trout which dictated how they took them which then lead to not hooking them fully. A bit like when they slash sideways at a crane fly or give the old head and shoulders rise to buzzers. Could be representing small fish so they would be coming at speed rather than a nice gentle gulp and turn take. What retreive speed were you going for?

theyre obviously taking them by the tail and not getting the hooked ,tie a small flying treble through the tail and that should do the trick,

A flying treble ! Oh sweet baby Jesus !!
