Chaff 3,622
Dog split his ear back in November and has just not healed I have tried all the usual including a trip to vets for antibiotics and hibi scrub but it appears worse now. I have posted some time ago about this and got loads of good advise which I took on board using potassium permanganate but still no good I now have time to rest him and get it sorted. Wondered if anyone else has used hydrogen peroxide to treat infections and if so did it work. Have been advised 15% peroxide mixed 50/50 with water. Cheers Quote Link to post
low plains drifter 10,663
Used to get it from the chemist, tell them what you want it for, and they will give you the right concentration, antiseptic wound powder might be a better thing to use though, it's good for drying up, and putting a scab on 1 Quote Link to post

Maximus Ferret 2,063
Is it definitely an infection that's stopping it healing?? Because while peroxide will kill some types of germs it will actually slow down the healing process. Like Mik, I'd say save the peroxide for punctures and bites, diagnose the problem (or if you can't then get it diagnosed by someone else) and treat it accordingly, possibly with appropriate antibiotics if it is infection. Lads on here often have good advice but they can't diagnose a dog without seeing it. Good luck with it anyway. Edited March 28, 2016 by Maximus Ferret 5 Quote Link to post

jeemes 4,485
Some split ears are very hard to heal and sometimes just harden off has the dog gets older. I had a lurcher once who was beddy/whippet grey with bit of collie. He had a terrible weakness for split ears that just would not heal. His sire was the same I believe. Hydrogen peroxide is a mild disinfectant anti septic. You can use it to clean dogs teeth or dye your hair blonde. I would try Epsom salts. It draws the red blood cells to the surface. Mix with hot water to dissolve crystals and use cotton wool to squeeze out over the wound. Bathe at least twice a day,but the more the better..Manuka honey is also very good. roybo 2,873
Hydrogen peroxide is for open wounds that the edges of the wound have died off due to lack of blood supply,it's not really for infection. It fizzes a bit ,but shouldn't cause pain. Can clean a wound up that has puss ,but best get it clean before hand to save getting that far 3 Quote Link to post
roybo 2,873
Chaff the problem with cuts on ears, is they tends to scab up ,but the itch so the dog shakes it's head or scratches at it with its paws, usually starting it bleeding and becomes a vicious circle. Is that what's happening? If so use a plastic Elizabethan collar. Then just do the usual and keep it clean and dry Quote Link to post
