Rabbit Numbers

Don`t know if any of you lads can remember but part of one of my permissions held the odd rabbit or two a couple of years ago and i was keen to allow them to breed up a few.

The land is unused grassland, no crops.

Well i went again tonight, ( no rifle), to check numbers. I saw plenty of kits about with a few adult rabbits on watch, all running about and playing.

If poachers don`t see this i`ll start taking the odd one or two for the table later this year.

I take them when I get the chance it's to dodgy to leave them with poaching and dieases if you fill your freezer you can't moan when there gone and what you see one night might not be there the next we took a few off here last week and struggle to see many the night we saw loads

Last two years we had mixy, through the place,so numbers were low, I didn't kill any around me last year, but things are looking up this year so fingers crossed,

Maybe it's just a coincidence but the perms that I have, if I keep manage the numbers, I don't see mixy at all, but where neighbouring land that's not shot you will find its on there. When I say manage I only mean not shooting every rabbit I see but it works and there hasn't been a case of mixy on any of them since I've controlled the numbers.

it's got to be just less straying coneys wandering off and picking up the fleas from infected rabbits that keeps it at bay.

it ain't the poachers round here it's the Badgers, the rabbits seem to be clinging on in small pockets, but I found another set yesterday, dug out and occupied by a young pig with the remains of the previous occupants left outside in the spoil of the dug out set, the over protection of the badger population is having a massive negative effect on rabbits and hares, maybe Brian the poodle may should come and explain why we need an alpha predator,s population spiralling out of control at the cost of everything else, I now see more deer than bunnys on my normal walks, good to hear you still have a few around

spot on pal. Badgers are all over my perms, I had a clip of one on my old mobile of one routing so intently that it hadn't seen me sat on the fairway of golf course until it was literally one foot on my welly boot! Safe to say they can Bloody run when you startle them. Back to the point though, we hardly see any hedgehogs on my part of Anglesey where the pigs have taken hold so maybe the rabbit numbers will follow suit until something sensible is done.

could have a steady supply if it all goes well,any sign of numbers dropping and you can always go for one big hit and freeze them for later anyway,if theres no owner wanting rid then theres no pressure at the minute so stick to your plan and see how it goes,at least you tried either way but good luck because your patience deserves rewarding i think...

Could not agree more mate, I have land close to me that used to hold good numbers, now every sett is a fuc*ing pig sett, walk round with the lamp after a fox, and I see more pigs than rabbits, insanity at work, yet I have some more land 20 miles or so away with hardly a pig on it, and the bunnies are thriving.

Theres still a good few rabbits out there but you have to put in the mileage now to make a desent bag
