white van man 3,300
Got ya. Blues dad was a racing grew. The whippet side was out of a dog called big land boy. All these names are normally linked somewhere!! He's fast enough for me but needs to learn to be more of a bush basher!! Quote Link to post

Truther 1,579
What's the opinion on what's making the fastest dogs the fastest? Is it always greyhound? If not what? I was looking at a dog named Bestman and he's sure got some hair on him and a look I like. He's Bestman 2 in the database. They add a bit of bull blood now and again mate, but i think that's to add physical strength and determination, obviously not speed, but bred away from a bit the strength and determination has got to be a good thing? low plains drifter 10,403
Is it just whippet and greyhound that is getting them there or are there other breeds that are being put in the mix to go farther than the pedigreed race dogs? The non ped racing dogs are known as grews in some parts of england (Midlands), and are said to have had staffordshire bull terrier added at some point, I expect they put the bull in for the sprinters muscle structure, in the hope of creating dogs with explosive take off speed ? I more curious about other breeds that might be used. That's where the "magic" might come in. I'm just guessing here but it's rather well known in the US that slipping a little of the right greyhound gets a faster dog but I'm seeing some other traits that have me scratching my head. They lead me to believe that there is another secret ingredient that is making the non-peds screaming fast...that's what I'm looking for. I'm not a race guy, I'm only a hunter, but I would like to take every advantage I can get when I put together a lurcher. I'm not afraid of spending several years putting the sighthound side of a cross together if I can find some advantage in it. I like collies for the other side but I like the speed in the final product. Quote Link to post
Dan McDonough 560
I slipped off to the idea of the myostatin deficiency problem in the whippets and talked to a friend of mine about it. My idea was to find a bully whippet and breed it to a stag hoping to get a carrier out of the first cross. He informed me that the carriers quite often get bad muscle cramping after a race. Well, that might be alright if the dog wins but it doesn't sound to good if your on a long day of hunting. Another idea bites the dust. Quote Link to post
lifelong cumbrian 1,826
I had a one years back out of a Rhinegold bred bitch to a non ped racing dog, can't remember name, threw very bull like, like a little tank. Far to chunky for racing as it was to small for the weight. It was a shock it turned out like that. My cousin still races and one or 2 of hers have a look of bull about them and they don't have bull in for any generation we know of, be back from the 50's and 60's i would think. Quote Link to post
lifelong cumbrian 1,826
This little bitch was only 17" like a miniature greyhound, fast little thing, was out of Chatterbox, 1/4 grey in parents, probably more back in breeding. http://www.thebwra.co.uk/cgi-bin/breeding.pl?op=breeding&index=17396&gens=5&db=bwra.dbw http://www.thebwra.c[/url] Quote Link to post
