Evolution Of The Bunny Vs Evolution Of Rabbit Dog

Recommended Posts

Im not saying whippets aren't fast but always makes me laugh when folk suggest they are the ultimate bunny basher.. Purpose bred lurcher wins hands down imo .. Look at Trevs vids for example.. I've seen it with my own eyes this season ..yes they can catch well but far from the "best" atb sesku

Just an observation.... Take a look at the side profile of a bunny.through natural selection ie .survival of the fittest, nature has deemed it necessary to equip these creatures with a roached back

I wouldn't say a whippet is the ideal rabbit dog ... Far from it .......

Now if your talking about speed what about the ostrich 60mph no sloping back long tail there's a thought pmsl

Only the man/men who first bred them can answer what they were bred for ... There are plenty of theories but who knows what's fact ... There is nothing a whippet can do that a good lurcher can't do better ........

I've got to disagree with you there socks.

Has a lurcher got the instant take off speed of a whippet I don't think so.

A whippet will and can.get from a to b faster than a lurcher.

The bitch I've got here has ferreted with a few different whippets and whippet types and has beat every one of them to the rabbit every time ......

King, like myself is just using the whippet as an example, given that is the one dog that was bred with nothing else in mind but the animal I was comparing it to, and unlike a lurcher which varies greatly from dog to dog.the whippet through a process of selective breeding "survival of the fittest" even, has a type. I'm not sure if people are genuinely missing the point. It's more likely just a case of "let's measure willies".

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say that they were not bred specifically to take hares, fox, rats, badgers, deer.im no historian but I think it's safe enough to assume for the sake of this topic that the whippet was in fact bred specifically for rabbits.

I've allways been under the impression that the greyhound is that fastest dog in the world

The whippet is the second.

And the whippet is the fastest accelerating dog in the world.

Whippet as we know it wasn't just bred for rasbbit catching it was bred for racing ,rabbit catching would of just been a bonus same as modern greyhounds racing wasd bread and butter

I would think catching rabbits to put food on the table with the use of a small dog that toolk up minimal space and little feeding was first port of call for working class families and of course racing came afterwards

The only thing I like about whippets are their guts for a little dog. The rest you can find in greyhounds but over a greater distance so makes sense to stick to them , as they don't really lack guts or acceleration either.

I suppose whippets are good if u need a dog indoors and ferreting but that's as far as I'd go myself.

If the whippet was bred so alike to a rabbit to be the best, then surely u need to look no further? But people use lurchers over them even just for rabbiting. Past rabbiting and the whippet is out of its depth really.

I stand corrected brenner mutation would of been better used by myself as you worked out what I was getting at.

But for a single use dog then man has designed the whippet as his ideal rabbit dog as we know.Ive never heard of anyone using dingo blood in a Sighthound.

I wonder how that breed of dog would serve man.

:hmm:This is an interesting, if somewhat theoretical topic...

The concept and various conclusions reached,..go way above my head,..so I'll stay well out of it..

However,..whilst I've never seen a straight Dingo/Sighthound mix,...I have utilised a canine that has undoubted Dingo influence in its genetic makeup.

I found the resulting progeny, to be quite different in both their method of hunting,..mode of behaviour and general primitive attitude, compared to the average, running dog composite...

Whether this was a plus or a minus point,..I've not yet decided...:laugh:

maybe the topic would have gone a different way if I hadn't used a specific breed. And just said rabbit dog.. It was meant to be more of a thought provoking thread aimed at the place of hunter and his dog in the cycle of nature. A.t.b

I can't agree with that King mate.

Both my lurchers are out with whippets regular and never get left behind. The brindle bitch is exceptionally quick. No fancy breeding just a 24" lurcher. But she beats the whippets A to B regardless of the distance. They just haven't got the leg to stick with her.
