What Make A Good Purse Net ?

im about to start doing a bit of ferreting next season and would like to make my own nets up over the summer if i can , whats a good average size to start making and whats the best weight twine to start with please and does colour affect the catch rate or is it a case of if a rabbits got a ferret up its arse it dont make no odds lol. nowt to technical im a total newbie

Having used hemp all my life I now use spun polyester bright florescent yellows and reds.

True tiercel I've got some made from wool only one ring on had them since I was a kid not great but caught me bunnies just hanging in my shed now look shite compared to today's gear atb Flacko

I'm the same nets made of also rats and every length rabbits are colour blind so the colour doesn't matter but it helps the ferreted see them and saves you from looking stupid leaving one laying on a burrow , I make mine twenty meshes wide straight to four foot but that's no going to suit everybody

thanks for that ,am i right at 20 mesh wide thats about 40" wide give or take ? i appreciate it wont be right for every one but if its a usefull size it will give me something to practice on to start me off ,what weight twine do you use for yours

4ft nets at about £2.50 id just buy them in

i know tbh i will buy some in, but its a bit like tying flys for fishing "its just something i want to do" there the same, cheap as chips but tying your own you can tweak them to suit

20 meshes wide will give you 80"(6'8") using a 2" meshboard

Don't make nets, don't want to. Got nets here of all shapes sizes and materials, and they catch bunnies, but imo the knots make the net, get them rights and it's sorted, fook them up and they start slipping and it becomes a pain in the arse and ends up in bin, get them knots right and tight

some truth in there and the very reason lads make there own nets

Aye I've made rat nets but like all other types of nets I can't use I just give them away to mates , the only diffrence in all nets is the size of mesh board and for rat nets I just use a plastic ruler that's a inch wide

That's why I pass them on same with fox nets I would sooner give them to mates who will use them and just keep purse nets and short nets and a odd longer net

It's dead easy to rattle out different nets once your comfy about knitting and your knots don't slip after all it just a repetitive thing row after row till you get to the length you want and it's a great feeling. Catching some thing in a net you've made your self even if it's just a rat , but after somebody's killed it you have to get it out the net and reset it no thanks they carry to many diseases for me
