Fishing Injuries

Recommended Posts

I once got a naylor carp hook right through my finget and the point of the hook was barely sticking throuh the other side. We where in the middle of France and still plenty of fishing to do. After looking through everyones gear for about 40 mins, one of the lads found a rusty pair of plyers. My brother the sadistic tw@t wanted to pull it back through the way it went in. So I necked 3 carona's one after each other. Pulled the point through and chopped barbed part off then pulled it straight out from the eye of the hook. Never give me any pain and I caught an 88lb catfish that night to.

Got a mackerel feather in the side of my knee as a kid. It had barbs on the shank too. My granddad made me look away while he squashed them flat, pushed it through and squashed the main barb and pulled it out.

Nice.

Mackerel feather through the bottom of my foot.

My mate had a size 18 stuck in his eye after walking behind me whilst I was overhead casting a 2oz feeder.

The worst was a mate who climbed a thin tree, which had two main limbs one which was stumped, he fell out of the tree and I kid you not put a hole in his ball sack.

Another one I had was making a seafishing rig using a 6oz lead and a 3/0 hook. Had the hook between my teeth and dropped the 6oz lead, the hook luckily enough never gave me a free peiricng and just pulled through my inner bottom lip. Spat out a big mouth full of blood but it soon stopped bleeding.

Another time went Carping up near Crewe and one of my mates brothers come, big lad and supposed to be a hardcase, it was when mainline active 8 boiles first come out. He went to bait up using one of those needles like a harpoon and went straight into his thumb. He fainted on the spot and ended up in the ozzie.

Always remember that day well I had 40+ carp all between 10lb-24lb in a day session on mouldy active 8

I was unhooking a mid double pike that was only hooked on the bottom treble when it shook it's head and the top treble went right into my thumb . Had to cut the trace and let my mate deal with the fish while I pulled the hook out my thumb , luckily I'd nipped the barb down a bit so it wasn't as bad as it could of been

Last injury I had was a few years ago when I was pole fishing for tench in the Silt Pond at Horton Kirby. Bit of a bird cage swim, and I got snagged on something on the bottom. Managed to ship the pole back and grab the elastic, which was well under tension and kapow... float through finger, didn't pierce the other side of the finger but put a fair lump on it. It actually pushed the float body along the stem. Pulled it out OK and hardly any blood and unbelievably NO pain. The consequences could have been much worse had it aimed towards my mince pies.

I recall a time I was fishing a small lake for carp/tench and crucians and a lad and his mate approached me and asked me to remove a barbed baiting needle from his finger. Cnut was trying to push it through a hard pellet whilst holding it. He made such a song and dance about it so I told him to go and get it done at the hospital, squealing like a fanny he was.

Must be the speed it goes in at, and obviously how you remove it. With hook that went through my finger was caused by being lazy. 3.5 t/c rod in one hand attempting to grab a carp about 1.5lb with my other hand, fish fell off and the bend in the rod plus a 3oz weight took it skyward. Happened to fast to even feel it.
