This place has been worked dozens of times over the years but it's never held until today. I tried one of my dog pups who's keen as mustard, he marked a place the other day and marked this one too. I

All done and backfilled nice, one happy farmer

many reasons why they don't backfill correctly.... as has been said already its easier to put back in than it is to take out.....so the 1st main reason is LAZINESS...2nd... No Permission and have chan

I agree with stop ended being dug out by quarry as we've dug a place several times in the same dig .If the terrier gets the run around in this place you can guarantee it will end in that stop at 1.8 m .Breaking through to a large chamber requires more backfill than normal and we look for logs, boulders and spoil from entrances to ensure a decent job .If you ain't a fussy digger why worry what's goes in if you have to dig again ,same place another time .what annoys me is backfill where turf and topsoil are put in first ,goes on .

Crazy or dedicated to getting the dog out whippet?

You put them in its our duty to get them out.

whippets 100% correct that needs shored... sure if your down that depth and everythings going well and have time to take pics...another hour or two to shore up wont hurt, yes I agree the welfare of terrier and quarry is forefront.. but when it comes to human safety... all stops need to be pulled out for the men in the depths... as in safety of man on the shovel is worth more than a terrier surely?
don't worry about human safety. Terrier safety comes first....

I've had a few digs this year mid tube with my big dog, he's also got a habit of pulling them back, what do you lot do if you dig mid tube, backfill or bridge ?? I've bridged the ones that I dug mid tube, one of them I left open till next day and went back with the silky an bridged it with some 4in thick oak. If it's a stop I leave as I found, also dug one at 0.5 ( mid tube) in a large Place an just made it into another entrance and have had another dig in the same earth about two week later

I think the gist of the thread is to do your best with whatever is to hand to create as natural a look as possible after we leave .I know what your saying about creating an entrance mate ,done it a few times too when backfill isn't available .In a large sprawling place I would never bother trying to recreate the tube but a small earth that holds regular needs care .

i used to use anything to hand to help backfill . i did this at a good small place and stuck in a load of stones and sticks in the stop. i dug it to a little bitch the following season and she had somehow got herself between two foxes amongst all the crap i had put in and got between a rock and a hard place so to speak. the damage she took wasnt good and she was lucky to survive it. you would have thought she had had another dog at her back. :icon_eek: . never done it since then :bad:

if the proper materials are available to hand ie.large flat stone or some thick fresh branches cut to size with folding saw I will use if its mid tube, small earth, or a stop over earth, sometimes in hard or arkward ground I like to keep the old stop intact,as its a hell of a lot easier opening up an old scar, instead of giving yourself the same hardship in tight ground because the new stop has moved a couple of feet from old dig, having said that most places that can handle it,its a straight backfill
