morton 5,368
seen many a set ruined by dog catching quarry mid tube and lads not bridgeing and set ruined never holding again,i had 2 sets like that 2 years ago that hunt left in a right state went back last summer bridged 2 holes in one set 1 on the other and had quarry this year from both sometimes its a must imolike any job, if done properly it will last. Its when its done halfheartedly with bits of branches, it results in a mess. Ive found its best to fill the hole with what came out, compact it and throw a little more on top from the spoil in the other entrances, the occupants have an habit of being able to dig and excavate to their satisfaction. 2 Quote Link to post

I agree with that Morton. I've never bridged in my life even when I was as green as ..... S.B. Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Building bridges doesn't come naturally to me either . 5 Quote Link to post
s.e.s.k.u 1,893
food for thought regarding the tarpaulin we like to leave the place looking like we've not been there... I have noticed a lot in grazing fields you can see where previous digs have been because of the sunken grass, lads just backfilling level before replacing the sod.. 1 Quote Link to post
Oldandknackered 48
I know several experienced lads who swear by bridging , or backfilling in a way to keep the tube open, in order to keep a sett live, the first person who advised me to do it being BN. But I must admit I am often too lazy !!! 1 Quote Link to post
Dunkanon 380
goes on everywhere you go, came across many an open dig just abandoned. Thing i find worse than not backfilling(which is bad enough) is finding places that have been trenched in from the entrance and the place just fckin destroyed.....and some of these have been done by so called experienced terriermen who despite years of fox hunting clearly havnt got a fckin clue! 3 Quote Link to post
Dig-deep-draw-charlie 2,713
I always find that when back filled properly and left for a few weeks the quarry that moves into the hole next just reopens it anyway, but that 2x2 slab sounds like a cracking idea Quote Link to post
marshman 7,758
A couple I've come across in the past have always had rubbish around , food packets and empty cans typical ! 1 Quote Link to post
dillydog 8,463
You must have the same mugs as I get in Staffordshire, I think they're just out for the picnic and a bevy or two. I spend half my season backfilling other twats holes. I never have and never will bridge, it's never made any difference to any earth I dig. 8 Quote Link to post
onion jonny 526
two by two slabs you would need a transit pick up instead of my wee van in fact why dont you go the whole hog and tar and curb a road up to the den. 3 Quote Link to post

I'm still digging the same places I've always dug, in all fairness sometimes I have to wait a while longer for them to get worked. I don't know if it's because they just didn't fancy the place or because I'd ruined it but sooner or later I'll be back there digging again. The only difference I've found is you get the runaround more once you've taken out the oven. The fastest way to ruin your earths is to drop the fox back into the dig, something I no longer do but it was something I took for granted years ago 1 Quote Link to post
dillydog 8,463
This place has been worked dozens of times over the years but it's never held until today. I tried one of my dog pups who's keen as mustard, he marked a place the other day and marked this one too. I gave him a spin but he couldn't get on in the place, it's just a dug out rabbit hole so I put him back on the couples and dropped his mother. The old bitch is 11 years old and although every fibre in my body says retire her I honestly think it would be cruel to do so, she lives to work. She'll have a few hedgerow places until I think it's unfair and she's not holding condition. 18 Quote Link to post
